It sounds really cool don't get me wrong. But for the cash I'd probably get a separate handgun. This way my wife or kids (when we have them) would have something to play with. However my budget is very tight.

I mainly want one to help with form, trigger control and follow through. Being a new handgunner, I go to the range at least once a week, and usually shoot 200 rds or so. That is almost $25 of ammo every trip, and that doesn't even cover the range fees and targets..
So a .22 conversion for me would be a way to shoot more for less.. And get better trigger control and form for a lot less expense. Of course I have a subcompact, so I will probably have to buy a 22 instead.

I'd welcome a .22 conversion for my 9mm subcompact. The advantage is being able to have the same feel, and sites and a cheaper ammo!

I'm not too sure about a 22 conversion..........I would think the lack of recoil would be great in practicing, but when you shoot your "regular" ammo, kind of a surprise, in a bad way. I mean if I went out and practiced w/my XD in 22, then converted it back to 40 and HAD to shoot it(ie defensive situation), the increased blast and recoil would be a detriment. This is assuming of course I needed a second shot or more.

I completely understand the whole idea behind a .22LR conversion barrel/kit for the XD: cheaper-to-shoot, lower recoil, quieter ammo is certainly a motivation. But for me, I'm going to keep my XD-9's just that: 9mm. It's a personal opinion, but there's something about changing the caliber of a handgun that I hesitate with. That hesitation is enough reason for me to not do it (even if it's totally safe and has been done for years successfully). If I wanted an actual .22LR handgun, I'd go out and buy one. YMMV.
Besides, for only $169, I picked up a VERY accurate .22LR rifle. It's much more accurate than I am. I'm currently researching scopes for it (my eyes can't really see a small target at 25m w/ the iron sights). I figure a conversion barrel for my XD would probably cost just as much as a .22LR rifle + scope. And there's something about my little black rifle that I am really drawn to (it's my first rifle). Add to that the $9.22 box of 500 rounds for target practice (and even the .22 Aguila Colibri ammo that can be shot indoors without hearing protection and without the neighbors freaking out). It all adds up to an awesome, cheap, fun time. Just my $0.02 for you guys. For my budget, purposes, and thought process, a .22LR rifle (or "dedicated" .22LR pistol) will always trump a .22LR XD conversion barrel.

I cannot imagine a more cost effective training tool for someone who carries their XD. I need to train a lot more than I do, but at $17/100 rounds...I don't have the income to do that anymore with any frequency. If I forego the SKS I've been thinking about and do the .22 conversion instead...that's smarter money for me.
Sure I'd love a separate .22 target pistol...but I don't want the .22 conversion for target shooting.

You guys have got to remeber the fundamentals for shooting are all the same whether it is a 458 Lott or a BB gun it is all about trigger control and sight alignment. If you can't get those right then you will never be a better shooter. The 22lr conversions give you that. they allow more trigger time with the gun you will shoot the most and let you use it more effectively. I have the pleasure of shooting with Bryce Williams who ranked 7th in the nation last year in the IDPA nationals. He has gone through 2 Advantage arms glock conversions just because he has shot them so much he completely destroyed them. 10s of thousands of rounds are what it takes to shoot better. 40s&w gets expensive even if you reload.
