Don's Guide Rod & Spring for XD
Ok, I have seen a few people say that you should get Don's Guide Rod & Spring for XD. Why? What does it do for you? Does it make the gun more accurate? Is it just sturdier? Please let me know.

The DGR is a single solid rod as opposed to the compound rod in the stock XD. This obviously makes it simpler and allows you to easily swap different weight recoil springs. Putting a heavier spring in will spread the recoil over a longer period of time to make it "feel" softer.

I have the DGR plus the bushing that Don makes as well as a prototype fireing pin spring retainer. All products are made with excellent care and the highest standards. And the guy is knowledgable as hell.
Will it make you shoot better??? Well I shoot better with it, Course I have multiple springs that I interchange for various reasons. The main reason I purchased it is that when the HS2000 came out a few years ago. My guide rod broke and I went through a circus of hoops to get a new one fron Intrac. It's probably one of the cheapest, simplest mods you can do that will effect you ability to put one in the 10 ring...

I never had any issues with the original guide rod, but the simple, solid design of Don's Guide Rod is more reliable and flexible. I also wanted a 22# spring for my XD40, to slow down the recoil (not sure if that's the technical name for it), which has helped me to improve my shooting.
I change to an 18# spring when I switch to the 9mm EFK barrel (takes about 1 minute) for my wife to shoot. When using the 9mm barrel, my XD doesn't eject rounds very well with the heavy spring, usually stovepipes. IMO, it's an inexpensive, high-quality upgrade you won't regret. |

So with my 9mm 4" barrel should I go with the 22#,20#, or the 18#. I would love to get softer "felt" recoil. Any suggestions?

I had a 22# spring in with my XD9 and hated it. It could not throw the brass far enough. Brass would always either hit the top of my head or hit my right arm. Went with a 16# spring and it is much better but it still occasionally throw brass my way. Might go with the 14# spring next. I really don't think the recoil of the 9mm is that bad and I am still have fast target aquisition.
