first holster
Howdy,
I'm thinking about getting my first gun, an XD-9 subcompact to take with me on backpacking trips. The only thing that is keeping me on the fence about the CD-9 versus a smaller gun is...the size and how I can carry it without it getting in the way too much of my backpack. It obviously needs to be readily available with an external holster, or what's the point of packing. So I'm looking for a holster that I can carry with my backpack on and while fishing. Any suggestions? Thanks Walt |

How far down does you backpack go? To the belt line or lower?

I tried my pack on tonight to get an idea if I can wear a belt holster. I think it'd be tight, but might work...not sure thought. I might be able to hide the bottom strap behind the holster and XD by my beltline.

The pistol can be fully exposed? Get a thigh holster then. Those are the best anyway.

You might could use a cross-draw on the belt. You might also consider something along the lines of a "tanker" holster or the "Doc Holliday" style of rig that cowboy action shooters use. Here's a pic of one (near the bottom): http://www.cochiseleather.com/shoulderholster.html . Basically the Holliday rig is designed to fit/rest more on the front of the body, rather than under the arm. Another thought is to get a holster made that will clip on to the front of your pack straps.
