Good Holster for Driving? XD9 Tactical
I do a lot of driving with my job, sometimes at late hours in bad neighborhoods. I carry an XD9 Tactical in the car with me and I'm looking for a really good holster that is comfortable and functional. I'm right handed and really looking for something that I can keep on my left side crossdraw style. Obviously shoulder holsters are an option but I would really like other options. Anyone have any recommendations?

What kind of car do you drive? I plan on taking the useless holster that came with my XD9 and using just the main body and screwing it to the underside of my dash below the column. I've seen "car" holsters that place the pistol at your belt buckle, but that seems damn uncomfortable to me.

I picked up a velcro ankle holster on ebay that works great w/ my 9 SC. I was thinking of getting another one and using some foam to wrap it around the seatbelt. looks like somebody already came up w/ it.
my major concern was safety in the event of an accident... i wanted to make sure it was fully foamed up so i wouldn't break any ribs or anything. also, any thoughts on carrying in condition 1 on this rig, again in case of an accident? I don't want to survive the accident just to give myself a self inflicted GSW. i doubt that'd be much of a concern... same as dropping it but you never know... |

I prefer a shoulder rig if I am in and out of vehicles often during the day. If it's just driving around without me getting in and out constantly then I just slide the gun between the seat and the center console.

Wow I really like that holster. It's easily reachable and is undetectable in plain sight. The seatbelt retains the holster from moving around. It doesn't rely on being attached to the dash or shoved in a crevice.
It can also function as a gun holster around the house by using the sling. I like that. Quote:

This one is interesting. A little pricey, but I may try it after my next gun purchase. I like that it will swivel back up into the normal crossdraw position when you get out of the car.

I'm not sure about that Wilderness one. A little too "Man Purse" to carry on your hip.
I will be doing what a friend of mine has already done. I drive a Dodge Ram. I am going to buy the Shelf that bolts in place of the visors. I will mount a Kydex holster up there to hold my XD while I drive. He already stopped a would be car-jacking, just by transitioning his Stainless .357 from the shelf to his lap in full view of the approching "suspicious characters". They took off in a dead run down the block.

I like that idea, but I'm not sure it'll work that well in a Honda Accord. I have a cheap Unlce Mikes attached with velcro to the bottom of the dash next to the steering column and that works pretty well, but I like any excuse to get a new holster. Now I need to get a small safe for the car. Right after I get the new 1911. Then I'll need a new holster for that. Then, well, you know!
