XD .40 shooting 9mm?

Here is the deal. I have a XD sub compact in .40. Can I swap in some parts and have a XD 9mm sub compact?

Are .40 mags and 9mm mags the same part?

What kind of barrel (and chamber) is required to make it work?

Will the striker still be properly centered on the smaller diameter 9mm rounds primer?

Assuming there are parts to do so, is it wise? Any problems?

Let's say no such products for sub compacts, it can be done in service or tactical right? Same extra questions apply to doing it on those paltforms too.

check the efkdragonfire site to see if their conversion barrels are currently in stock. You may drop some extraction reliability due to the extractor engaging less of the case rim of the smaller 9mm. Fine for a range gun (less $ on ammo). Specific 9mm mags can improve feeding reliability but 40 mags will work. You might need to bent in the lips very slightly to hold the 9mm at the proper height. Don't know of any other mfg offering a drop-in conversion for the short barrel.

Thanks for the feedback. Anyone actually run 9mm in their .40, sub compact or toherwise? How severe (or not) have the extraction problems been for you?

Not sure about the sc, but with the 4" you can drop in a .357sig barrel and use the .40 mags and shoot .357sig.

Same frame, it'll work. Change out the mag and barrel. Everything else is centered, so you'll have no problems.

Again appreciate the feedback guys. Intersting point on the .357sig. The advantage of 9mm (for me) is shooting my gun cheaper. If it is a .40 to start with, is there any advantage to spending money to get the ability to shoot .357sig? I mean it is just as pricey and a little ahrder to find than .40 ammo right? Ballistically or for SD .40 is more desireable than .357sig anyway?

The .357 SIG is basically a 9mm bullet driven by a .40 S&W powder charge. It drives a lightweight bullet at high velocities. The .40 S&W shoots a heavier bullet more slowly. For SD, this translates into the .40 S&W penetrating deeper. .357 SIG ammo may be hard to find, and expensive when you DO find it. I've had an opportunity to shoot both the .40 S&W and the .357 SIG from the same platform, a Steyr M-A1. The .40 S&W recoil is more of a "push" while the .357 recoil is a little snappy. This may affect the speed of accurate follow-up shots.

For me, if the choice was between the .357 SIG and .40 S&W for carrying, it'd be the .40 S&W hands down. I really like the .40 S&W for carry, but I carry a 9mm. I'm a little more accurate on quick follow-up shots, and there's a significant round count difference (13+1 vs 10+1) in the gun I've chosen - a XD9SC. If they could cram a couple more rounds into the short mag XD40SC, that'd be the one for me.

I have 2 sigs with both barrels (p226 and 2340), .357 sig is a penatrating round, more so than .40, I can tell you from experiance it does punch through more milk jugs full of water, which the pentration thing may not be a good thing considering that the .40 has plenty for self defense use. recoil is almost identical, pretty much feels like a 165gr .40 to me but felt recoil is subjective.

yes .357 is harder find and more expensive.

I've run across posts on here by people who have done it, from what I recall they seemed to run pretty well in the sc, the xdm needed a reduced power spring. but that's just what I've read, never actually done the conversion myself.

Springfield only sells the service and tactical versions in .357 Sig, I believe this is because the .357 has quite a bit more recoil than .40 which would make the SubCompact less manageable. The increased recoil plus the light weight and "flip" with the short gun might also lead to feeding problems. I hope the .357 continues to grow in popularity, I just bought a Sig P239 in .357. The stats seem pretty impressive, plus I've been seeing quite a few stories where the .40 has poor penetration, specially through a couple layers of clothing, whereas the .357 should rip right through.

I have a 4" service .40 that I installed a Storm Lake conversion barrel in. I have fired 200 115 gr FMJ, 50 124gr FMJ, 50 147gr TMJ, and 50 147gr JHP. The only failure I have experienced is a "stovepipe" while my wife was shooting 115gr. I think she was "limp wristing" the gun, told her to firm up her grip, she fired about 29 more rounds without a problem. The only other mod I did was the 9mm magazine. I did fire 15 rounds through the .40 magazine just to see if it worked, it does but the bullets are kinda loose coming out of the mag and I can see that being a problem.
