Holster Question, but not which one to get

Don't know if its the holster or how i wear it but, i cant seem to get a good grip when i draw from IWB. The problem comes i think with the body shield, the part that sticks up higher than the holster in back to keep from contact with your skin. I wear about 3 O'clock fairly tight with the belt and when i draw, especially if trying to do quickly I cant get my hand high enough for a solid grip. If i try to get my thumb wrapped around the grip while fully in the holster i'm only holding the bottom half or so, Its the xd.45c so grip is shorter anyway. the way i usually draw (probably not correct but its what i do)is almost like my hand is making "a gun",trigger finger pointing to the ground thumb pointing forward over the back of the slide and sliding my thumb around as it comes out of the holster which gives me a high enough grip to fire IF i had to but still 1/2 in mabe less of what would be a good high grip so i end up readjusting and sliding my hand up. Should i cut that part off or is it just something i'm doing wrong, like wearing it in wrong place or to tight. The holster is a D.M. Bullard dual carry and fits the gun great just not getting a positive grip Thanks

I recently went through exactly the same dilemma a few weeks ago. I have a really comfortable holster that had a really nice shield on it. After my last weekend class the instructure pointed out that I was regripping the gun after the draw to get a good grip. After the class I did some serious surgery on the sweat guard to ensure that I can get a full firing grip on the gun prior to pulling it from the holster. I can grip the gun more securely, draw faster, and didn't really compromise comfort. I can feel a little more of the gun on my hip but it's still very comfortable. Different holster so take it for what it's worth.

I'd chop the holster to fit my needs and if it still didn't suit me, I'd find one that did. I am not much on sweat shields (personal preference more than anything), but if I can't get a proper and positive grip right away there is no point in using that particular rig.

You only need the sweat shield behind the slide anyway, so cut it to what they call a combat grip. Search the treads and you will find a pic.

I'm all for modifying a holster until it works for you. Since I'm left-handed, don't like the "FBI cant", and carry my gun a little farther forward than most people (9 o'clock) I'm constantly modifying holsters to fit my needs. Some barrel screws from Home Depot and a Dremel tool work wonders.

First thing is make sure the holster is made for that specific gun. Generic (fits A, B, C, and sometimes Y guns) holsters often fit many guns badly, and cause problems and dissatisfaction. Plunk down the $$$ and buy a brand-specific holster. They're not that much more expensive than the generic types. Decide where on your body you want to carry it. Draw your gun over and over until you have in your mind what needs to be done to modify the holster, then go for it.

For me, the less holster - the better. I prefer OWB speed scabbard and yaqui type paddles. I prefer Kydex. I like the quick, clean "click-click" of drawing and reholstering.

Yea its seem like some surgery is order, kind of a shame cuz its a quality holster but, if it doesn't work for me ...Now that winter is approaching i would love to try a OWB kydex retention type Blackhawk ect.. but i did say it wasnt a what type to get thread so i will start searching threads to figure that one out. I am a little confused as to how well that will conceal though under a winter jacket sure but you gotta take that off when you get where your going so it still hasta be under a cover garmet and seems like that would show pretty easy. I think lots of folks do it so i'm sure i can figure it out and seems like it would be much more comfy.Time to go strap it on and figure out what needs to go and get to cuttin thanks

I realize your questions wasn't what type, but I have both the supertuck and Blackhawk Serpa. Love them both.

A loose, untucked sport or golf shirt conceals nicely. So does a photographer's-type vest.
