Shooting Chrony

I received an F1 Shooting Chrony for Christmas so I took it out for a quick range session and noticed a few limitations right away. The data is presented as you shoot but without the remote you can't access the rest of the statistical data. The other thing I noticed was how much I hated shooting then you have to stop to pick up the pencil and start writing down the data only to have to get up and shoot again, stop again, grab the pencil... yada yada yada.. I did some googlefu and found a couple of good sites with a diy remote cable and a diy serial cable to interface with a laptop. I found some extra cables laying around the shop so decided to make my own. I didn't feel the need to get any kind of specialized custom software I simply used vt100 to log the velocity data as it's being collected then unplugged the cable from the laptop and connected the remote to scroll through the statistical data. Here's the results.

Thanks for sharing that. I noticed the same problems with my chrono, also a shooting chrony. Let's see if I can get an 'ol laptop connection going!

Hard to find a serial port nowadays, luckily we use dell laptops for work with a legacy adapter rocking the serial and parallel ports lol

Get a USB to serial adapter you can find them on ebay for about 5 bucks. I have two.

Looking at nolabs info and your print out how do you get the fps value?

According to nolabs the first column is shot number, second is string number, third is velocity.

The right hand column is velocity fps the chrono can also display meters per second if so configured. The data I printed was just me testing the connection by waving a stick across the chrono sensors.

Cool, I'll see if I can write an interface for it. I've written several for telecom software that use a serial connection.

for those not "serially adept" using a digital video recorder works great...

focus it on the screen, call out the shot (which gets recorded on the tape) and go from there...

everybody has an old video recorder somewhere...

just saying... easier than lugging a laptop along...

zoom video recorders are also great spotting scopes as I learned from a guy shooting next to me...

Finally dug out my USB to serial adapter and started putting stuff together. I'll see if I can get something working this afternoon.
