Michigan Judge Lifts Firearm Ban, Allows Gun Carrying in Courtrooms
At a time when even nail files and pocket knives are barred from courts, Hillsdale County has reopened its historic courthouse to citizens who legally pack weapons. Circuit Judge Michael Smith recently ordered the "no guns" signs removed at the courthouse in downtown Hillsdale, saying the ban is against state law. The normal, sane person---even one who is usually very responsible---can be pushed to breaking. Adding guns (and "firestarters", according to the article) to the mix is just a bad idea. Considering that the cop ratio is very high in courthouses, then saying that you need it for self-defense is ridiculous. Judges have "panic bars" under the bench for a reason... I've seen more than one person (especially in domestic relations court) try to attack the other person, or try to climb over the bench and get the judge, when a case went against them. People I would have thought were perfectly sane just got pushed past the breaking point. Add guns, and now you have dead judges, dead ex-wives, and maybe a few dead deputies. Rights should be exercised responsibly, and carrying a gun into a high-stress situation where you have no appreciable risk of needing to defend yourself with deadly force is just not responsible.

While I dislike many of the laws that prevent me from carrying wherever I please, a courthouse is definitely a place that guns should be prohibited IMO. A lot of emotion, anger, and hatred are present in court proceedings and guns are just not good in that type of environment.
