More US Preschoolers Shot than Police Officers; US Leads in Gun Death

Who dies in greater numbers from firearms, police in the line of duty or preschoolers? The answer -- contained in a searing new report by the Children's Defense Fund -- is surprising and disturbing. In 2005, the most recent year for which data are available, guns killed 69 preschoolers, compared with 53 law enforcement officers. That's just one of the alarming facts in the Washington-based... Misleading article. It announces that "preschoolers" are the ones being shot, but when you dive into the article it talks about teens and young men "under 30".

she makes it sound like they were shot by someone else whereas we know most of those are negligent firearms owners. Police put themselves in the line of duty every day. Misleading article.

Good grief! This is from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution one of the worst liberal rags in the country!

Their "facts" are so convaluted that to call them "facts" is a misuse of the term.

You need to remember that to these folks there is no "legal gun" except in the hands of the government. Any privately owned firearm is an "illegal" weapon. So their solution is the total ban on private ownership of firearms, Period.

I emailed her this.

Ms. Downey,

Per this consumer product safety commission report (http://www.cpsc.gov/LIBRARY/FOIA/foi.../toymemo04.pdf) there were 210,300 toy related injuries in 2004. Surely reasonable restraints on toys are both constitutional and wise.

The CDC (82 U.S. kids died playing choking game: CDC) claims that over the past decade 82 children have died playing the "choking game." Surely reasonable restraints on children playing are both constitutional and wise.

Here is a 2005 data table (Table 10. Number of deaths from 113 selected causes by age: United States, 2005)

You'll notice that there were 278 deaths from ages 0-24 by accidental discharge of firearms. Tragic? Yes absolutely, as any loss of innocent life is.

Now notice the category "accidental drowning and submersion." 1459 deaths between the ages of 0-24. This means that you are a little more than 5 times more likely to die in a pool than accidentally getting shot with a gun. Surely reasonable restraints on pool owners are both constitutional and wise.

Now you may be saying "but that’s just accidental discharges!" Don't worry, I'm getting there.

Ok, adding up all the deaths from age 0-24 by firearms (excluding suicide, because if a gun wasn't available, they'd just grab a bottle of pills or a knife), we come up with just shy of 5100 deaths. Scary. More casualties than the war in Iraq has given us.

Now factor in that not every person is in close proximity to a gun every day and you may think "my god, that’s terrifying."

But look at this.

Almost 13,118 deaths by motor vehicle accidents. You are 2.5 times more likely to die in a car than die from a gun in ANY capacity. Just based on death numbers. When you factor in that we use cars EVERY SINGLE DAY, and most people do not encounter guns every single day, you odds of dying in a car increase even more. Surely reasonable restraints of car owners are both constitutional and wise.

In 2005 (Let's hear it for "doctor control") there were 120,000 accidental deaths caused by physicians, per the CDC. 120,000. That’s like the population of Charleston, South Caroline being gone tomorrow. Surely, for everyone's sake, reasonable restrictions on doctors are both constitutional and wise.
Think of that next time you drive to your doctor.
Have a nice day.

updated it....

I can not believe they would skew a story around kids. These folks would not stoop that low.
