Sorry, but as much as I love guns and as hard as I fight for our rights, this statement makes me shiver.
No chance that another kid might be around. My wife is a stay-at-home mom and the kids aren't left unsupervised at home. That and the fact that the magazine is stored in an accessible-to-me-but-not-to-them location.

I let my oldest fire 1 round out of the XD once. He wasn't even close to being able to rack it. Believe me, I'm not one to take chances on safety, but you have to find a right balance between security and the ability to quickly deploy a weapon in SD. Too far from that point in either direction can be dangerous.

Each parent has to make their own decisions as to what is best for their own family.

A gun is not some special magical object, although it can be dangerous especially to children. So are cars, buckets of water, open windows, household chemicals, staircases, knives, the corners of furniture, pots on the stove . . . etc., etc., etc. Is all that stuff going to be hyper-regulated too?

When the gov't is in charge of raising children (through excessive regulation) we are in big trouble.

Philadelpia, well said.

I am in a house with children from 21 to 7. My sidearm stays loaded, but it sits above me at night and goes on my hip in the morning, where it stays all day. There really isn't much chance of anyone 'accidentally' putting their hands on it.

Kids don't respect personal property - their brains aren't done yet..

The authors' father is/was a duma$$ if he left a gun in his drawer expecting his kid not to go in there.

In the safe or on the body - period. Anything less in a family home is negligent!

EDIT: I guess I have to admit I tuck my XD between the boxspring and mattress at night with a bit of the grip exposed, but I hang the covers over it. If someone can remove it without me waking up, I guess I deserve the worst..FWIW, my son is 10, is familiar with guns and has a healthy fear of them. The best way to teach firearm respect is to shoot a watermelon or better yet take the kids hunting to let them see the horror a bullet makes. The kid may never eat meat again, but at least they wont play with guns! (Not that I would rely on that fear/respect as a subsitute for securing my weapon.._

The author is obviously playing for emotional appeal, yet too many of us are easy targets due to lazy habits. Leave out your porn and blades if you must, but secure your hard drugs and firearms unless you want your child to die 'accidentaly'.
