Guns Are Not Christ's Way, Yet They Are America's Favorite Murder Weapon

DAVENPORT, Iowa -- As the weather turns our Midwestern thoughts toward the pleasures of a day in the sun and outdoor fun, the news turns grim with mayhem caused by guns. Let's review just a few of this spring's incidents. Children out and about in Chicago have been shot with such frequency that Mayor Richard M. Daley called a crisis meeting of police and other city officials. Twenty-four children... [Catholic Messenger (Iowa), Editorial, via gunpolicy.org ]

They're also America's favorite defensive weapon, as more people are saved by guns than killed by them every year...

ETA: this editorial bothered me for some reason, so I sent them this on their contact page.

Just thought you should know that while it is true that guns were used to murder nearly 12,000 people in 2005, you should also realize that studies (GunCite-Gun Control-How Often Are Guns Used in Self-Defense?)
indicate there are nearly 2 MILLION guns used in lawful self defense every year. Guns may not be God's way, but we do live in His world. Life is a precious gift and we owe to to the Creator to protect the gift He's given us.

What????

What was that?

Another attempt by someone who screwed up not taking responsability for their actions, putting the blame on the rest of society for past mistakes......

Maybe it is time to make a decision in AmeriKa, give gun safety/education classes? Kids know how to have sex by the third grade, maybe they should know how to defend themselves from the creepy guy/girl down the street also.

Priorities are screwed up in this country. Blah.Blah.Blah. That's what I hear on the TV every night.

If you don't want guns, fine. Put a sign on your yard advertising you have no way to defend yourself and the front door is unlocked. See how long it takes before you have to fight for your life. Bet you won't.

Now that's democracy. Hide behind those that are armed and willing to pay the cost for freedom.

Anyway, I digress.... back to the range.

You mean Christ had a favorite murder weapon? If I remember my Sunday School lessons correctly, the net total deaths he caused was in the negative.

If the article means to say that he was against weapons to protect yourself, they're dead wrong.

Luke 22:36,38
36He said to them, "But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.

38The disciples said, "See, Lord, here are two swords."
"That is enough," he replied.

He's telling them, "Trouble's coming, arm yourselves." He taught peace and love, but also responsibility for one's own safety.

Sorry to preach, but if someone insults my religion by trying to twist it to justify their bad politics, I will reply.

TTT, I was going to quote that verse, but you nailed it.

To say that 'Guns are not Christ's way' is to attribute something to both Christ and Christians that I don't believe is accurate.

When there are other options, leave violence aside, if possible. You don't always have to beat up the playground bully. When the time comes, however, you should be fully able to defend the lives of yourself and others.

I agree. I sent this to the author of the article prior to reading your post:

Frank Wessling,

The Bible also says in Luke 22:35-38 -"35 And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing. 36 Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one. 37 For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end. 38 And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough."

For those who do not have a sword, sell the clothes off your back if you must to purchase one.

God does not command for us to be victims.
