New York Governor Wants Law to Keep Guns Away from the Mentally Ill
New York's legislators have an opportunity to keep handguns out of the hands of the mentally unstable. They not only should seize the chance, they have a responsibility to do so. If not, they should be held accountable by voters in November. After the horrifying massacre at Virginia Tech last year, federal and state authorities began to revise gun laws to prevent a similar tragedy from happening... While I agree in principle that the mentally challenged shouldn't have a weapon, I fear for how this could turn out. It seems the solution involves so much bureaucracy and red tape that it would only make things worse for us.

I struggle with stuff like this. While i certainly don't want weapons in the hands of felons and the mentally deficient, any "infringement" really irks me. Next thing you know we will have to undergo a psych evaluation before we can buy a gun...

Don't mentally in ill people belong in HOSPITALS? In my state, it's illegal to ever have a gun near a mental hospital or a prison so... Once again, New York just WISHES they were as cool as Utah.

Governor Paterson is like the blind leading the blind. No pun intended.
Has Paterson ever actually SEEN a gun? Does he even know they exist? In his case, it would all be heresay.
