The problem is someone who is mentally ill and cherishes his gun rights will then have a reason to never seek treatment. And therefore, could become more mentally ill while in possession of firearms.

We have to not use the stigma of mental illness as a reason to permanently suspend someone's freedoms. Losing one's freedom is a major penalty and should only be because of serious felony offenses; not just being stressed or sick.

But, of course, the real reason for this NYC legsilation is to demonize guns and gun owners and incrementally restrict everyone's freedom.

Like King George III during the American Revolution, Mayor Michael Bloomberg is surely the "John Bull" of our time.

This is a slippery slope if I ever saw one. Pretty much everyone I know is mentally ill in one way or another (yea...I am lookin at you) so this law would need to be very well written or else it could be easily abused. I think they would really need to have very specific 'danger to others' language for it to be any good. Even then I dont like it.

The anti-government person in me says "slippery slope" but the realist in me says i don't want some sling-blade mental case talking to god on a two way radio and carrying a gun...

I hear you. But I guess the "pro-gun" premise is if many ordinary folks are armed, then some nutcase will only be able to inflict minimal damage before being taken down. Which is a lot better than him capping 20 or 30 people until the SWAT team arrives.

And really, this entire argument hinges on the concept of "how much do we trust government?" Will government prevent all the Columbines and Virginia Techs and keep all the bag guys away? I think not.

I just have very little faith in government anymore. And if caught in a bad situation like the above, I'd trust my life to one of you guys carrying concealed, if in the vicinity, more than I ever would trust government to come to my rescue. Heck, government will often just seal off an area until the shooting stops, then timidly go inside.
