If you carry a weapon, especially a gun, you run the risk of over-reacting in some cases. You might misread a situation and become the aggressor. Another important point to remember is that if you threaten an intruder with a weapon, he can disarm you and use the weapon against you. You should be really really really sure of your intended target before you pull the trigger, yes yoda that is wisdom(SARCASM)

really????? I thought you should just come out guns blazing at the first strange sound at night with you eyes close and shoot in all directions just to be sure.

or I must have some comom sense, but then again some people need to be told this, this are the people whom should take comom sense 100 101 102 103 104..... and then maybe own a gun
