In Gunfights, Up to 87% of New York City Police Bullets Miss Their Target
New York City police officers fire their weapons far less often than they did a decade ago, a statistic that has dropped along with the crime rate. But when they do fire, even at an armed suspect, there is often no one returning fire at the officers. Officers hit their targets roughly 34 percent of the time. When they fire at dogs, roughly 55 percent of shots hit home. Most of their targets... [New York Times, via gunpolicy.org ]

Let me be the first to say this...
there IS NO DROP IN CRIME in NYC. i was training/working to get into the NYPD a few years back. I had many NYPD buddies helping me. They attribute the "drop in crime" to politics and book cooking. Many crimes are NOT reported and many that are, are downgraded and thrown out so the precincts do not get a bad rap. If crime increased, the precincts would come under fire. and in the worlds most PC'd police dept., they do not want that to happen.

I'm not surprised that most bullets don't hit the intended target. I would argue that most of police firearms training is totally static. It is the typical step up to the line, fire 9 rounds at a distance of 25 yds, etc. We don't have enough dynamic firearms training, the training you will most likely use in a deadly use of force confrontation. I know I wish our dept. would do dynamic firearms training.

This statistic, or similar, is mentioned in the Crimsom Trace promotional video.

It sounds to me like they need more training and practice.

Real world situations are not like range qualifications or sports like IDPA.
In real world situations your target is moving, your target is trying to kill you, and at the same time you are moving and trying to shoot your target. Even if you shoot 100% on a square range, your real-world accuracy is going to drop just because of the dynamics of a gunfight. No amount of laser sights or static range training is going to improve it. The only way to improve is by doing force-on-force training with non-lethal ammunition.

I don't know how many times I've watched Spike or some guy show with police chases ending with the cop(s) shooting several rounds from no more than 15yards and MISSING everything.
They sure didn't miss that black dude 50 times though.... These "protectors" aren't trained worth a stinky dump. |
