fine I'll say it, black athletes who most likely grew up on the street and werent able to grow up from the thug life even in their professional careers are given "courage" by carrying a weapon. No different then when some street punk goes out gangbanging carrying a weapon

For those who didnt notice, Jason Whitlock who wrote this article is black, and explicity states in this article:

Quote:
Many professional athletes have made the same decision. According to a Boston Globe report in November of 2006, NFL and NBA players are most likely to legally carry concealed weapons, and “handgun ownership is much less prevalent in Major League Baseball and rare in the National Hockey League.”

Do I need to spell out for you which particular type of professional athlete feels most compelled to arm? Here’s a hint: It’s the same group that looks most like me and is most likely to die by gun violence.

It’s a vicious little cycle. Black athletes carry guns to protect themselves, but they fail to realize or choose to ignore that their decision to carry escalates the potential for trouble.
And he won an award for his mixing of sports commentary with social commentary

So do you feel that simply because the grew up on "the street" they have less of a right to legally defend themselves?

sorry when you follow a person then pull a gun after that person is leaving the premises (what Harrison did in this case), you no longer should have the right to conceal carry. You just abused the hell out of a CHL and should be immediately revoked as per the law. That is not what a CHL is for. If he used it responsibly in this case then I wouldnt complain, but he didnt. As a result he will probably lose his CHL, and this media frenzy over the incident makes him look bad.

I understand what you are saying re: this specific case, but you didn't really answer my question.

You said, "black athletes who most likely grew up on the street and werent able to grow up from the thug life even in their professional careers are given "courage" by carrying a weapon". How do we deal with this issue?

didnt say they didnt have the right but since they grew up on the street, the thug mentallity can come out any time and they will pull the weapon at the stupidest time, which is what happened

That's right, folks. If you play professional sports, your life isn't worth protecting. Has to be true, I read it in a news paper somewhere!

I do enjoy Whitlock's articles. I hear what he's saying, but I'm not sure I totally agree with it.

Harrison was stupid for following the guy outside, truth. Harrison should not carry a gun because he is high profile, false. He really just needs to be smarter than that. If having a target on your back is equated to having an arguement with someone in your sports bar, then you're just an idiot.

All in all, professional athletes are in more danger, but usually they are asking for that trouble as well.

I'm not trying to nitpick your wording or anything (this is not a personal attack, more an observation), but this particular sentence seems to point out that being a part of this forum (specifically) or owning firearms (generally) automatically seals you to a specific mindset - something which I respectfully disagree. We've covered this before in other posts so I won't delve you into further boredom - However, I think it's important to point out we don't all have to disagree with this article or risk being ridiculed or discredited.

That said, I wouldn't say I agree with everything in this article either, but it's simply the author's point of view not a 'end all be all'-type statement and does in fact showcase some valid points.

"You see, when you carry a gun, you tend to go places you have no business going. You pick fights you have no business picking."

this may be true for some people but personally i REALLY dont want to shoot someone and when i have my gun on me i am even more cautious about where i go. i try at all costs to try and avoid a situation that is more likely to be violent.
