Risk of Violence, Injury, Death Increase in US Homes Where Guns are Kept

Last month, the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments in a key case involving guns. In it, gun owners are challenging a District of Columbia ordinance that bars applicants from registering guns in the district and requires that guns kept at home be unloaded and either disassembled or locked. Opponents argue that the ordinance violates their Second Amendment right to bear arms. If they prevail,... [Sacramento Bee (California), Editorial, via gunpolicy.org ]

Imagine this, from a CA newspaper. I'd love to ask for sources to back up the stats.

as would i, it seems that noone i know (most of whom are gun owners, all of them hunting families) have had (except one) accident involving injury with a firearm..

i will bet you our state also has lower murder rates than any "restrictive" one on the books.

and we're "awash with guns"

40 - 170%??? Methinks that statistic is purposefully overblown, and well outside the margin of error. Only a sloppy statistician would have a spread of 130%

Another example of why intelligent, thinking people place little credibility in mainstream media outlets.

The facts, available to anyone, including reporters and editorial boards, overwhelmingly refute the Bee's Editorial. But they don't seem to be bothered by the truth. They just invent their own "facts" and figures. However, a lie is still a lie no matter how you try to color it!

Everyone should be familiar will Kellermann's research. The Brady group constantly recited his results and few people call them out.

While it is true that one can usually use stats any way they wish, good research and statistics can't be refuted.

Study this for a great lesson on how NOT to conduct research: GunCite - Gun Control Web Site: A Gun in the Home

Wintemute, a leading researcher of gun violence, documents the increased risk of violence, injury and death that the mere presence of a gun in a home poses. The statistics are striking and alarming. "Living in a home where there are guns increases the risk of homicide 40 to 170 percent," Wintemute says.

Even if those numbers were true. (I dont think so)he dosnt specify which ones are justified!!!

theres a vastly greater risk of me getting hurt killed when I go out to drive to work in the morning, i start eating unhealthy and start smoking. Suicides shouldnt even be counted, not having a gun is going to stop them from committing suicide? Please

There are very little people hurt/killed each year in accidental discharges at the home as compared to the true killers of america: heart disease, cancer, auto accidents, etc

So those without guns go to gun ranges, rent a gun and shoot themselves.

In other news, a study shows that a large number of staircase related injuries have been noticed in two-story houses compared to those in single-story houses.
