Pilot's Gun Fired in US Jet Cockpit 'Because of Cumbersome Safety Rules'

WASHINGTON -- Armed airline pilots may be at risk of discharging their weapons on planes because of cumbersome rules imposed by Congress and the Transportation Security Administration, a group representing the pilots said Tuesday. A 2002 law prohibits pilots from carrying their guns outside the cockpit without a trigger lock, and as a result they must frequently affix or remove trigger locks... WTF? if you cannot handle a weapon safely and most definitly cannot engage and disengage a trigger lock without firing the weapon, why are you allowed to carry in that situation?

You need to do some more reading on this situation. This was not entirely the pilot's fault. He was just following protocol. Try reading the Michael Bane Blog before you jump all over the pilot's back for this.

<del>Geez... he can handle a several hundred million dollar aircraft, and be trusted with the lives of possibly hundreds but he can't be trusted with a $700 handgun. </del>

Comment withdrawn while I read michael bane's blog.

Admittedly, the TSA requirements in this case do seem quite silly...

That policy ranks pretty high on my "Dumbest Things I've Seen Today" list.

Read the blog and if you can drive a bus at 35,000 feet at a couple hundred miles and hour with 200 riders in the back making less than $100k, I might see the mental and dexterity skills might be a little lacking. I do belive that the cockpit has about a million littls switches and dials. If you can understand the mechanics of a firearm, holster, and lock.

Process:
Hold steady
Look at hole through trigger guard
Calmly and steadily insert lock through hole
Lock pistol

Level 3 retention holster might take more mental and physical abilities. Ever heard of practice makes perfect. I see it as blaming someone else, no one is perfect. If you are responsible for others lives, handling a firearm fits this unless you are in a room alone, you are responsible for not causing a negligent discharge. Do what it takes to make that not happen.

I may not fully agree with the policy or its implementation but there are reasons for attempting to keep the firearms stored safely. NDs and someone getting their hands on it are the worst possible outcomes.
Rant over.
