I just found out that my school has a shooting club and I'm looking to join it next year, but I am realizing that I may need to get an upgraded gun for it.
currently the only pistol I own that would work for USPSA/IPSC is my XD40SC, however I am thinking of getting a different gun to use if I am going to be doing any sort of gun games. (any excuse to get a new gun right)
I am thinking of ether the XD45Tac or should I got with the good old clasic 1911.
I am leaning towards the XD because I am already familiar with the platform, and it has a higher capacity, so less reloading...which would hopefuly mean faster times.
I am planing on owning both these at some point, the only question is which one do I get next.
if any of you seasond shooters have any suggestions I am open to hear them, Like I said as far as uspsa/ipsc shooting goes I am still a virgin lol, and over all I am new to the world of guns (only been shoothing for the last 6 months)
You can't beat a trigger job on a 1911, regardless of how much money or work you dump into an xd it still doesn't compare to a tuned 1911.
This said...i will warn you that 1911s are pricey when you get into upgrades. They are high maintenance guns that get super addictive. They are the finest close quarters weapon there is.
I shoot IPSC and IDPA with my 1911, i have also done it with an xd9 service and xd40 service. If you get 10 round wilson or mccormick mags for the 1911 and shoot limited ten youl be fine....
practice, practice, practice!!!

Before you buy more guns, go shoot a couple with what you've got in the Production division and just observe what goes on. Check out what the top shooters in your squad are doing. See the differences in what the guns/divisions are.
Be aware that whatever gun you choose will normally determine which division you'll be put in. So if you're running a 1911 with standard cap mags, you'll be in Single Stack. If you run a 1911 with 10-rounders, you'll be in Limited-10.
For XD45Tac, you'll normally end up either in Production if running 10 round mags (but you'll likely be at a disadvantage to the folks running 9mm guns like the XD9 Tac), or Limited-10. You'll be at a serious disadvantage in Limited or Open due to the mag capacity (most guys in those divisions run much higher capacity double stack mags).
Second - its not really about the gun - get GOOD training from a competitive shooter. I've taken classes from both Jarrett and Burkett, both of whom are outstanding. If you can't get to a good class, a decent alternative is Matt Burkett's video, coupled with Steve Anderson's books.
But nothing beats getting good hands on training. A GM shooter can quickly diagnose issues you may have in stance, grip, shooting, movement, etc.
Then dryfire and practice....
YMMV with this advice - I only "occasionally" compete. Alot of guys are way more into that here than I am (my focus is more combative shooting/defense/ECQC crazy stuff).

Reason: deleted ref. to OS gun - XD40 not XD45
I have shot with Steve Anderson a few times and let me say.....WOW. It is very worthwhile to just watch guys like him every now and again. A lot can be learned.
I forgot the most important aspect of the shooting sports....HAVE FUN!

I ran in the Limited division here with my box stock XD9 becuase I never carry my weapon with 10 rounds so I didn't want to do USPSA with 10rounds. I managed to classify as a "C" within the Limited divison. When I shot Production with my G17 I classed as a "D".
The games themselves get addicting and I'm currently working towards getting classed in every USPSA division except open.
