Thinking about joining IDPA

I was watching some IDPA videos and it looked like so much fun! any ideas on how to get started? I live in Arkansas and suprisingly enough (being the natural state) there aren't many places to do it around where I live.

Go to International Defensive Pistol Association and look under club listings for Arkansas. I started shooting in a club that was 3 hours away. After a couple of years, I got my Safety Officer certification and started a local club. Word of warning: IT IS HIGHLY ADDICTIVE!!!

AR has a IDPA State match May 19th in Little Rock. I know am trying to get out to that one. Check out www.idpa.com and look at the matches and their forums. Check out my FB fan page for pics/vids/news on matches.

Agree with the others on checking for clubs on the IDPA website. Looks like there are 8 clubs in AR (International Defensive Pistol Association - Affiliated Club Contact Information), hopefully one or two will be near you. It is a lot of fun and really helps you learn what works and doesn't for you. You can go through the rulebook at the IDPA site and there are many short intros available on the web. I often send people here CODPL: IDPA Overview for a quick overview. The club where I first shot an IDPA match had this online and I went through it before going. Every club I've ever been to has welcomed newcomers. Last year took a friend who had only shot twice before. Once to get a feel for a variety of handguns and then again when she borrowed one for her concealed carry class. For two weeks all I heard was how she wasn't ready, would be embarrassed, wasn't good enough, etc. Afterwards she just wanted to know when there was another one! First time out just take it slow and concentrate on safety. As long as you handle your firearm safely, you'll get a lot of encouragement, advice, etc. Thankfully I've found a few places closer to me since that first match. 3 hour drive to get somewhere at 9:00am on a Saturday takes a lot out of me! Good luck and have fun.

I live in Western Colorado, and went to my first match last weekend. I am a newcomer and new handgun owner, and had only shot 50 rounds through my new gun. I wasn't even going to enter the match, and was just going to watch, but was talked into it. The safety officers were very friendly, tolerant and patient walking me through the different stations, with the only emphasis in my first match being on safety. It was incredibly fun and educational. Agree with addictive part.

I want to so bad but there is only one place near me and they only operate on saturday mornings. I get all my OT shifts on Saturdays so it's difficult

Join up and don't look back. Once you start this, standing still and punching paper just won't do it for you anymore.

Do IDPA, do USPSA, do 3 gun, do everything you possibly can, because they are all crazy fun.
