I contacted one of the guys who host the IDPA in Atlanta Indiana and he said the the Serpa is fine to use. He said he uses one at times and doesn't plan on banning the holster anytime soon.
I've been in training sessions w/ guys shooting the Serpa & it's fine as long as you maintane safety discipline during the draw; keep that finger off the trigger & NEVER go faster than your ability allows.

I sometimes wear an unbottoned shirt as cover. It's a little harder to draw since it's so light but it IS real world. You can get inexpensive vests from Sportsman Guide that will work quite well for IDPA.

A vest is conenient & cooler, but anything that covers the gun is fine. In colder temps, any jacketd works. Get a surplus milspec shirt & cut the sleeves off, vest.

Use what you have until you figure out what you want to do.

Here is a set I like. I buy them for each pistol I use.

Pro Series IDPA PAK :: Competition Series Products :: Blade-Tech Industries

They have other choices there too, this is just the one I like.

Hope that helps.

Have fun, be safe

well I just wanted a $20 vest to use until figure out if I can keep attending idpa. Its a good distance from my place so something I will be able to do every other month hopefully. Heading out tomorrow to indianapolis after work.

so I read where a collar polo shirt will work? Just keep it untucked?

It doesn't matter if the gun prints. Holding your arms straight out to the side, the gun and ammo pouches must stay concealed. A button front shirt or light jacket will do fine.
My recommendation is 6 mags. Sometimes our club does a stage with more than one string or you might have an equipment malfunction. More is easier on you, UPULA is great for this.
Use the holster and mag pouches that came with the XD, they are fine to start. After nearly 10 years, that is what I still use. Why spend $ that could be used for ammo?

Anything that covers the actual gun. I have seen vests, jackets, untucked pullover & button shirts. The idea is you have to do something to get to the gun besides just reach down.
I agree, shoot what you have holster wise, but the XD stuff is very marginal. COmptac makes a great paddle that works really well for OWB. Anything IWB is legal & most work, but I prefer something that keeps the mouth of the holster open for reholstering. IMO, you need at least 4mags; 3 to shoot & one to use to charge your pistol full up. The last one can be a crap mag that doesn't work well, it will only be used to top off the gun. IF you are fortuante to be able to use high cap mags, then 4mags alone get's you there.

Bladetech and Comptac are my choices. Use what works for you and happens to be IDPA legal at the time. Just remember its a game and have fun.

I'm hooked already. Went to Atlanta Indiana this past Saturday and did IDPA. It wasn't an Official IDPA. It was set up to get your feet wet for first timers. Had a blast. I wish the range wasnt 3hrs away. 2hrs of class time then 3hrs on the range.

For standing positions I did excellent. Had several compliments asking if I was military or police. I said "No and its not that I'm a good shot, it's the gun doing all the work for me". They liked that. Shooting a XDM9 4.5. I'm right eye dominant and right handed. I shot just as good with my left hand stationary as my right hand. Never occurred to me to practice left handed. Where I did average was shooting on the move. I've only shot stationary. It looks so easy on youtube videos and on TV. Need more practice at that. Went out on the farm today and practiced moving toward and away from the target.

There is a guy that is semi pro that was one of the instructors. He is out of Terre Haute Indiana and does USPSA. Also teaches about techniques when shooting. He told me to head over to his club and enter to learn. I told him I didn't think I was ready for IDPA let alone USPSA. He said I'll be fine and have the potential of getting better. Said I'm right there. Just need some tweaking. So guess I have found my new addiction. The guy was a great instructor and a GREAT shot. He shoots a STI 2011.

That being said, I have some cash laying around and want to put a little money into my XDM. Besides a trigger kit from Springer Precision, any other suggestions? Everything at the moment is stock.
