XD45 dings in shell casing
I have a XD 45 in fact a pair of them and they are both doing the same thing. When the shell ejects it puts a big ding in the casing,I looked and the factory fired casing has the same mark. My question is , is there something i can do to stop this,(2) is the casing safe to reload. (3) I read where someone says there sizing die takes the ding out, my die doesn't, do you know what brand does that.
Thanks in advance ralx873 |

well it is safe to reload, and a die might take a dent out but not the little mark it has where the slide actually displaced some of the brass, its like a deep scratch. you wont be able to get rid of it completely with a die.
you might be able to stop it if you were to round the corner of the ejection port so it didnt have any sharp corners but that would be lots of work and wouldnt really benefit you much if at all

Since the .45 XD is the only one I DON'T own, I cannot provide you with a solution except to say that the original 1911's did the same thing. After WW2 when thousands of them were made available to the civilian market, gunsmiths started playing with the ejection ports on the slides... namely grinding them out to be bigger, or "lowering and extending" the ejection ports. This solved the problem of dented brass in the 1911 types, and is indeed now the "standard" for 1911 production slides from many manufacturers. I'm sure some worthy smith can do something similar to your gun, but I would call Springfield first. Reloaders hated it in the 1911, and I'm sure if this IS common with the XD45 they hate it there too! It could be that a simple adjustment to the ejector face angle could cure it if the slide opening is large enough.

I did talk to my Springfield rep and she said the "teardrop" type ding you are referring to is common. No worries. I did not get a proper answer as to what they would recommend to stop this from happening.
I guess at least you know it is very common. I hope this helps
