Question Laser and Light Mount Issues

I have an XD40 with the 4 Inch barrel.

I have a Streamlight (now Insight) M6 laser/light unit mounted on the tactical rail.

Here is the issue. With some full power rounds the M6 will fly off the gun. This has broken the Basel once already. Thankfully Insight sent a new one and a new mounting bar and spring at no charge. Thanks so much Insight for covering these parts.

Now I am tentative about firing it with the M6 mounted as I never know if it will come off.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can insure it does not come off but still allows me to remove it cleaning and to change batteries.?

The strange thing is once on, it really feels secure. I really have to use force to depress the bar to get it off.

Suggestions anyone???

I spoke with a fellow who was experiencing a similar problem with his Streamlight on an XD 45 (though it wasn't flying off, just ceasing to work after firing - he returned and the second unit failed the same way).

He switched to a SureFire and has not had any problems. (I don't have either unit so I can't make any personal claims, just repeating what I heard).

Cool

Well mine works fine when it is on the gun.

Usually around the third round it comes off.

Well after spending $360 for the M6, just setting it on a shelf and spending another $430 on a surefire really pains me.

The Surefire was not available when I purchased the M6.

I have had it for years so just returning it is not an option any more. I had it and as long as I shot lighter re-loads (which I had about 500 rounds of) it works perfectly. When these ran out, I purchased hotter factory rounds and went to the range and after 3 shots WTF? My light was gone.
It was broken down in front of the position on the concrete.

I called Steamlight to get parts and was told they sold that line to insight. I called them and they felt the spring may have weakened with age and sent the stuff free. I shot it again checking after each shot and found it loose again.

It is my home defense gun hence the laser / light. But if it were to come off when really needed that would be bad to say the least.

I have mounted it on my SKS and shot it and it never came off.

hotter factory loads are a big question. Will it come off this round?

The Surefires metal construction sure looks stronger than the plastic of the M6.

Any gun smiths out there with suggestions?

Would deepening the notch or reshaping it with a file help?

Part of this may be the fault of the XD's rails allowing too much play. I.E. you may be able to use that light on another gun with tighter rails and it won't ever be a problem.

I've had no problems with my Insight XL2 coming off my XD40, even when I was using some incredibly hot Cor-bon rounds. (looked like a fireball coming from the end of the gun at a well-lit indoor range hehe)

Cool

It is odd as it really feels solid on the gun.

I really have to grunt the spring/bar to get it to release as this spring is stiffer than the original

Yes it works fine on my SKS riflle rail system.

I am assuming it has to do with sharp quick muzzle movement that releases the spring.

I will just try to find a brand of ammo that leaves it mounted...
