Hey man, I'm right there with you. I've been wondering the same thing. I've had my XD 9 for 2 weeks now and I guess now I'll keep a clip full for protection.

Just in case you haven't seen this Ash (seeing as how you have a new gun)

Springfield Armory Gear Up Promo Site

2 free magazines (That way you can keep two...apparently indefinitely)

After 2 weeks you should know your XD has magazines and not clips (you will be flamed endlessly calling magazines "clips" on about any gun forum.)

Guys, I should clarify my earlier statement. I mean I have literally had my 2 10rd G23 mags (one mag in the gun and one in the glovebox) loaded with full with 10rds since 1998 WITHOUT shooting the gun at all. ........... I know, why in the heck did I go so long without shooting it, well, moved to new area and job and marrage and all that and just got out of shooting. I have corrected that as of a few weeks ago, so I am back on track. ....... My point is, these 2 mags have been loaded and NOT cycled for 10 years and they performed flawlessly 2 weeks ago when I shot my G23 for the first time since then. So, in my opinion and experience, load them full and don't worry about it.

.....

Gravity, it's not just a good idea, it's the law
I hope whoever knows the story about those 1911 mags sitting loaded for like 40 years and then working flawlessly will retell it again.
I would be more worried about spread feed lips and out of round carts than the springs after long term loaded storage.

I used to be obsessive-compulsive about rotating my many mags once a month. I googled this subject once and found a paper by an engineer. The bottom line was that a spring does not wear by being loaded. It wears by use in the spring being loaded, unloaded, loaded.... In other words: use. I leave them loaded now. I am still O.C. about other things like cleaning but not rotating mags.
