The XD-40 Tactical: A Gun Apart

Literally:

I had my Tactical completely apart for a thorough cleaning, and decided to snap this image of it while it was disassembled. Yes, I know my digital photography "skills" suck, especially with regard to adequate lighting conditions...

The Tactical in the image was acquired new in July of 2002 and currently has approximately 16,000 handloaded rounds through it. It seems to be holding up extremely well, from what I can see.

Looks more gun-porn-ish than mine did.

Yeah, but your image has better focus than mine.

I think it looks fine, how easy did you find the process?

Extremely straightforward, logical and simple. Taking apart an XD in this manner makes one really appreciate the quality that went into the design, engineering and construction of the pistol.

The durability of the pistol is also quite remarkable: as far as I can tell, there does not appear to be any visible metal wear (peeing, gouging, galling, etc.) to account for the approximately 16,000 rounds discharged.

I think that pic's good enough for wallpaper. It's my new desktop background. Thank you very much.

That is a GREAT picture! I saved it... and have a question.

I wish this site would let me upload an image.. but I will have to save it on my server.. hold on.....

ok.. thanx for waiting....

The part that I have highlighted, number 15 in the XD Frame Parts List, is the grip safety.

I would like to remove the bluing from this part, and shine it up to match the exposed portion of the barrel that I have already polished. I am a little timid about tackling this project though, because it involves taking the thing apart. I am not particularly mechanically inclined, so it makes me nervous taking this apart.

What steps would you suggest to remove just the grip safety so that I can polish it, and put it back together without damaging the gun.

Thanks!

Raymond
