my xd40sc is 4.5" from top of slide to bottom of grip and just shy over 6" long from front of barrel to very rear of beavertail. width of slide is 1-1/8"
Basically, they're releasing a XD Service model with .2" less barrel, somewhat higher capacity (which, if their engineers had done their sums correctly in the first place, could have been released on the original model), and a funky grip.
What is there to get excited about?

the barrel is actually .8" shorter because the M has a 4.5" barrel, i like the new 3.8 better because of the serration on the slide, 3.8 or 4.5 really doesnt matter to me.
if there isnt a XDM .45 or a shorter gripped version if the 3.8, by february, i will get this new 3.8 "m"

Yes, but if you look at the original XD service (of which the "M" was supposed to be an improvement, but wasn't)...the new "3.8" is only .2" shorter.
I'm still waiting to hear how this is a better mousetrap.

oh, i see what ur saying now...lol
yes you are right. i guess with the added capacity (though as you mentioned could have been done earlier) and better barrel and trigger (small improvement) and the back strap.
I am not really that impressed with any of the "m" changes but i do like the new 3.8 slide serrations so for me its cool factor and the fact i dont have a 9mm, i figure it would be a decent platform to add a trigger kit to and have.
And that is fine with me, because I definitely have not taking a shine to the XDM, and have often worried that it would push out the standard XD line. But I don't think now that will happen.
I guess the reasonable pricing will keep the XD's around for a long time to come. I don't think there is too much of a market for $700 polymer guns; half the allure for plastic pistols is the cash you save.
I like improvements whether they be technically superior or just from a marketing perspective. Maybe this 3.8 is a little of both?
My XD9 is the ccw of choice for my budget until I can find a fuller grip and a substantially smaller frame/barrel without sacrificing shootability. This new M for my needs does not fit that bill. Having said that, if given the choice of getting a new 9mm that was smaller than the XDm I would of course choose the 3.8 if the price wasn't more than, oh, $75 more than the XD which of course it will be.
To date I think the best fitting full grip ccw for my hand and body type is the Kahr PT45 (think that's it). Super slim, almost too slim for comfortable all day shooting but then again it'd be pure ccw. I find it a better fit than Kahr's cw 45 model. Again, this is just fit, have no idea how it shoots or holds up or their customer service.

more guns=more happiness
I, uh, did mention higher capacity (look about 6 or 7 posts up).
And as an ex-owner of an XDm, the trigger is, far, far from an improvement.
Yay for the SA marketroids, I guess.
