40 S&W vs 45 acp for CC
There has to be a system error because this thread seems to be beating a dead horse. Anyhow... I will ask because I can't get a search to find anything.
I am going to be buying another XD (smiles) for a carry weapon. I love my XD45 tac but I keep reading everyones posts about how lots of folks love their XD40's. I thought I was going to get a XD45 service compact. But I have to hear the arguments for the XD40. Smaller package Great stopping power with expanding rounds and more rounds in mag... whats the deal how do they shoot. Whats the recoil like compared to a 45? Recoil is a big factor! How often do they kaBoom with the high case pressure and exposed feed ramp area from the long casing. I know its glock that has the kaBoom problem but I like my fingers and I plan to keep them at all cost!
Try to convince me I would love another awesome XD!

Man you just gotta get em all. No way around it. What im guessing people are gonna say is.. get what you feel comfortable with. or get the 45 cause you can use the same ammo. or get the 40 for cheaper ammo. but mostly its gonna end up being in your hands so its your choice.

I shoot IDPA with a 40sc (I also CCW with it). I haven't shot a .45 enuf to be able to compare recoil, but the sc is no problem. I probably have 2200 to 2500 thru my sc with no problems.

IME, in different guns, the .40 seems to have snappier recoil than the .45.
The .45 gives you better momentum, equal sectional density (combines to give you better penetration, generally), and has nearly 100 years of successful service behind it. Plus, while the .40 is likely to expand, the .45 is never going to shrink. The .45 operates at a lower SAAMI pressure, which is beneficial, but not critical.
The .40 is a great round. But in a weapon system like the XD where there is very little perceptible or actual difference in the size of the weapon (Unless you are comparing the XD40SC with the XD45C, S, or T), or the number of rounds it holds, it is hard to see the advantage of the .40, other than ammo cost (Which in my area isn't much of a difference). Go to something like a Glock and the difference between the two weapon systems is more clearly defined, with the .40 giving better ergonomics for small-handed people.
For me, the XD45C is the weapon of choice, with the XD40S closely behind.

From my experience, shooting .40SW feels a lot like shooting .45acp with a hot +P round. Not a lot of difference in recoil but it is noticeable. A .45acp is simply a heavier round with less velocity so the recoil isnt as fast and snappy as .40SW.
A .40SW gun is probably a little lighter than a .45 due to overall size so that may also contribute to felt recoil.
I currently own the XD .45 Service and I too am considering a second purchase. I am looking at the .40SW or the XD9 compact mostly for two reasons:
- Cost of ammo is lower
- Summer carry gun

See signature below and carry what you are comfortable with.
Any bullet will kill ya, it's all about the shot placement.
I for one don't wanna be shot (again) with a BB gun, let alone a real round.
And anyone that says 9mm won't stop a person, please provide us a good write up, with pictures, after you personally test the theory.

First let me correct one of your 40S&W advantages. The 45ACP holds more rounds than the 40S&W, the 45ACP mag holds 13 while the 40S&W holds 12. While I'm at it the stopping powder of the 45ACP is still superior to the 40S&W when using the same ammunition, defensive ammo is just as available for the 45 as it is for the 40. The 40S&W is basically the down sizing of the FBI 10mm which proved unpopular with female agents thus the 10mm bullet was was shortened to a cartridge the length of a 9mm allowing the use of the smaller 9mm frame.
As to how do they shoot? If you plan on using it as a defense gun with the proper rounds they are effective and relatively accurate and in stressful situation you will never notice the recoil. If, however, you plan to use this as a range gun the recoil is very snappy compared to the 45ACP and in my opinion annoying to shoot a lot of rounds through just for fun. Tally XD described it well as like shooting +P in a 45. The 45 recoil is more of a push and just is not tiresome to shoot a couple hundred rounds through in a session. The 40S&W Tactical with downloaded rounds at 900fps make a pretty enjoyable gun but with store bought ammo I get tired shooting. If it is to be a gun I will use a lot at the range and a defense gun I would get the 45 Compact which conceals nearly as easy as a Sub Compact while retaining a 4" barrel. With the full size magazines you have 13 rounds still more than a 40S&W. In my opinion the 40S&W in a 3" barrel may not provide enough velocity to properly expand some defensive rounds but I don't have any proof of that. I feel the same way about 45ACP in short barreled guns.
I don't personally know of any kaboom in guns other than Glocks that were not the result of overloaded rounds. But you should be aware that all rounds fired in Glocks will have a bulge in the base of the case which most reloading dies do not remove it doesn't matter what caliber.

Get a XD9SC. Plenty of stopping power and much cheaper to shoot. Just my opinion.
