i have a chance to buy either a ported XD 40 service or an XD40 Tactical for the same price. I already own a 40S and would like something a bit bigger. Which way to go? I know just get both and be done with the decision making, but I can only afford one at this time.

Tactical. It's just cooler.
Ported is OK but I've heard folks say "why drill holes in a perfectly good gun?" I kinda feel that way.

I would get the Tactical. I have both a XD-40 Service and an XD-40 Tactical and I like both but I shoot the Tactical better.

In an previous post on this subject, Overkill, stated he has found it is more time consuming and difficult to clean the ported. If I'm not mistaken, I believe he said he wished had not bought it. I'm sure he will correct me if I am wrong on the latter.

I find the additional muzzle blast and lack of versatility of ported guns more than nullifies the lessened recoil/quicker recovery that they afford. I would go with the non-ported versions.
I would say that ported pistols and shoulder holsters have a commonality: while there are a few people that have a need for such, most people buy them because they are "cool", not because they are useful (Please, I mean no offence to purchasers of either, but did you really need them? )

By the tactical, trust me the ported is dirty , loud, and spits fire and slag out at you. Its kinda cool at first, then the front sight disappears, and you spend twice as long cleaning.but I bought a 9mm non prted conversion barrel for mine and I like it much better. Now I've got a cool novelty kinda gun when I want to shoot the V-10, and when I get tired of that I can throw in the 9mm barrel and have fun plinking for a lot cheaper. All in all I wish I would have bought an XD9 in the first place.

I personnaly don't like any ported pistol, all the flash is a distraction to me.

I would definately go with the tactical. Unless your shooting inan open class shooting sport, its going to be somewhat usless for you to have a ported gun.

I'd recommend the tactical. I don't own one, but I definitely can give you my opinion on it if you buy one and send it to me......granted, it might take, ya know.....10k rounds or even more for the break-in period......
