Fieldstripping the gun with the snap cap in the chamber?
Let me ask you a possibly newbish question:
Is it safe to leave the snapcap in the chamber while fieldstripping the gun, ie. in the final stages of fieldstrip when I press the trigger (dry fire) will the slide loosen up as it would be without the chamber in the barrel?
The reason I'm asking this is, I'm just not comfy dry firing the gun without the snap cap. Right now I ALWAYS strip it with an empty chamber, but want to make sure if it would work with the cap as well.
Thanks in advance,
Kenan

No idea. I don't see why not, though. Everything is in battery during slide removal
It'd just be a PITA inserting the snap-cap IMHO
I just have a weird dislike to snap caps anyway for some reason. I guess I just don't like dropping the hammer with ANYTHING in the chamber

What about rest of the guys?
Your oppinion is very important to me, I'm sure some of you at least tried this and know first hand if it's safe to do or not. I'm just chicken and won't try it untill I get some insurance.

There's no issue with 'dry firing' an XD w/o a snapcap. If you do it only when you are disassembling, you're not hurting anything.

That's likely the best habit.
I have been teaching my wife how to check for unloaded, and then load and unload using snap caps as well as some dry firing.
Before each session, no functional ammo is permitted in the same room. She and I count out and verify each snap cap together before we start and count them out and put them away when we're done (far away and in a completely separate room and floor from any functional ammo).
For the XD it's pretty simple as the caps I use are red translucent plastic; for the .22 we each look at the bottom and each verbally verify there's a hole in each inert cartridge as we count them before starting. Doing it that way has instilled extra confidence in her. She knows the snap caps are inert, that functional ammo is safely locked away elsewhere, that the two can not get mixed up, and that even if through some incredible screw up they did get mixed up, both or at least one of us would catch it as part of the process before it ever made it near the gun.
I've been satisfied with the somewhat "anal" process but a hopefully foolproof process is the only way to go and I decided to teach her with snapcaps at first as she builds more confidence with gun handling.

i dont see a problem with it unless you are locking the slide back and manually sticking the snapcap in the chamber and then closeing the slide.
if you do this it will damage your extracter.
the only safe way to do it with out hurting anything is
1.empty all rounds out of gun and magazine
2. lock the slide back
3. push up the slide release lever
4.load the snapcap in the empty mag
5.release slide which in turn chambers the snapcap (now i really dont like letting the slide go forward at full speed when the slide release lever is fliped up to field strip it. it seems like slide might not stop at its normal pos and might go to far forward and maybe damage a part) so i usually pull the slide back just enough to disengage the slide stop and slowly ride the slide forward.
6.dryfire and pull the slide off

What's going to happen if you drop the F/P on an empty chamber?
