9mm to 40?

This is a discussion on 9mm to 40? within the General SA-XD/XD(M) Talk forums, part of the XD Talk category; has anyone tried this conversion? I have an HS2000 9mm which I would like to convert to 40cal. Would this require changes with the receiver? ...

You can't convert from 9 to 40.

The .40 casing is larger in diameter than the 9mm so it needs a larger bolt face than the 9mm. The 9mm will fit inside the .40 and still fire and extract. However, the .40 will not fit inside the 9mm, so it won't fire and won't extract.

Got it?

I thought we used 7.62x51, IE .308.

Yes, 7.62x51, but you knew what he meant. The .308 and the 7.62x51 isn't exactly the same.

thats only because of the pressure difference, with the 'commercial' .308 being hotter. The cases of 7,62NATO and our .308 are interchangeable and either ammo will work in either weapon.

The Russian 7,62x54r cannot be used in any NATO weapon for 2 reasons, the bullet of the x54r is larger and it uses a rimmed case. NATO ammo cannot be used in weapons chambered for x54r for 2 reasons, it is a 'rimless' cartridge and it will seat itself too far in the chamber.

Now, German MGs chambered in 7.92x57 can shoot .30-'06, as can a Mauser rifle. It won't be accurate and you'll have feeding and extraction issues, but it can be done...
