Sight Picture Help

When I purchased my XD .45 Service, I had them install the Trijicon Night Sights (Didnt get a chance to shoot it with the stock sights on). I'm assuming that this isn't going to effect the accruacy of the gun and I should still be using the "6-Oclock" sight picture? For the people that have the same sights (same as the factory night sights) do you use the "6-Oclock" sight picture say at 7 yards?

The way I aim/been pratcing at 7 yards and from what I've been reading in the manual, is wrong. I line up the front sight circle with the bullseye on the target.( So put the small white/green circle ontop of where I want the bullet to hit). My groupings are pretty consistent but are not hitting the bullseye. Im hitting to either the "left" or the "lower-left portions of the 7 and 8 circles.

Ive been reading that the cause of the "let/lower left" shot placement is due to either jerking/tightening fingers/trigger finger placement. Would adjusting my current aiming (placing the circle on the front post to where I want to hit) to say the "6-Oclock" example on page 32 of the manual help correct some of these problems? (Of course including fixing the jerking/finger placement problems sepereatly).

So say I want to hit the bullseye at 7 yards, where should I line up the top of my front post for a reference as to how to judge for the "6-Oclock" view. For example, should line up the very top of the front post to say the bottom of the 7 circle? Would this be an idea of how to judge the "6-Oclock" sight picture view?

Each gun is slightly different. My gun always shoots low at 7 yards and thus I have to put the front sight on the bullseye (cover it) to keep from shooting low. You are correct on the left/low left issue. Refer to this for additional information.

FWFW I have heard this is a common thing with the XD some shoot at 6 o'clock, others shoot low.

It seems that most XDs and in fact most tactical guns shoot POA (Point Of Aim) out of the box at 7 yards. I can't explain why but that is the case for many people including myself. It could be due the short range and the location of the barrel in relationship to the sights. At 25 yards the 6:00 aim works fine.

So when I shoot at 7 yards, how should I aim it? Place the front dot on the bullseye or should I do a "6-Oclock" type aim?

I have found that the 6 o'clock position doesn't work for my XD9 with the night sites nor did it work with the range rental with stock sites. I have to use line of site past 9 feet to get rounds to place where I want them and not be below the bull's eye. I wear bifocals so maybe that has something to do with it. I too had some issues with pulling to the left, but as has been stated, practice will clear that up. I now have almost 1,000 rounds through the gun and after about 200 rounds my groups and consistency started improving rapidly.

So for you, you have to line the center of the bullseye with the very top of your front post? I currently have about 500 rnds through my gun so far. So im hoping the "breaking in" has finished. I will try the way you shoot at the range tomrorow.

I block out the center of the target with the front site. You just have to experiment and find the best position for your front site to hit the center. One other thing I did was not move the target out past 7 yards until I got accuracy and tighter groups where I felt comfortable.

Thanks for the info. I don't shoot past 7 yards anyways because in a HD situation, you wouldn't really need to shoot father than that. Not only that, not point of trying to pratice further when Im not decent at 7 yards.

Anyone else have any suggestions for me or any advice?

This may be an obvious question but have you tried shooting from the benchrest? Keep the target at 7 yards. Don't worry about what anyone else is doing or thinking. You need to determine as deliberately as possible your handgun's tendencies. As well as your own.

Much of shooting low and left is too much finger on the trigger. Try to center the trigger on the finger pad and see if that helps.
