I used to drop the firing pin when storing my xds in the safe. I didn't like the habit I was getting into by pulling the trigger when storing. I would double and triple check the chamber before pulling the trigger.
Now I just keep both of my xds stored while cocked. No problems since I started doing this 8 months ago.

That is true. The springs you used the most will break the most. With over 12,000 round through my XD40, and nearly 7000 rounds through my XD9tac I have not had anything break more than the roll pin. I change my recoil springs every 2000 rounds and inspect my springs every time I clean my guns.

Will keeping the XD loaded & cocked do any damage to the firing pin spring , since it is fully compressed .
I have been told the spring will loose its snap if the gun is left cocked for a long time.
Of course this was a glockie talking.
Springs wear out through use (or stretching it out more than it was designed). In other words, shooting your gun will wear the springs out faster than keeping letting it sit with the springs under tension.
My 870 has a speedfeed IV buttstock..Pistolgrip with rifle stock that holds 4 shells internally. Having kept 2.75 shells in the stock while the gun rests in the corner weakened the springs. At the range as I fired the shells came out and I almost lost them because i didn't even notice them missing. THAT would have been exciting for whoever mows the grass there :S
