Question about my grip...

So I went to the range last night. First time I was able to shoot my new XD-9sc! Tons of fun. Between my husband and I, we put about 500 rounds through three guns. We were at the range for about an hour.

So anyways, two different questions...

First, I noticed immediately with the subcompact that when I was shooting with the 16 round magazine (as opposed to the 10 round) that the space where the spacer and the magazine well meet pinches my palm. Not enough to break the skin, but enough that it was uncomfortable and is sore today. Is this something that is common? Or do I possibly have a grip problem? I know that it would be hard to come to that conclusion without actually seeing me shoot, but some suggestions or ideas would help.

Also, I noticed that my knuckle where my thumb meets my hand is all bruised today. I noticed it getting sore yesterday, but if I altered my grip so that the gun wasn't hitting the knuckle, then my accuracy immediately suffered. Is this normal? I suspect that it is because I have small hands, so the gun doesn't seat properly in the web of my hand when my finger is on the trigger.

I've taken to wearing thin leather gloves when shooting, since my hands get sweaty. They also help combat the wear-and-tear from both shooting and loading the magazines (and the cold, when I shoot outside). Are there any other things I might try to help my hands survive? I've seen some people put rubber grips or grip tape on their XDs. How much difference do these sorts of things make? Any recommendations on which to go with?

Any ideas/recommendations are greatly appreciated!

i've hear that this happens with the extended mag sleeves on the SC. i've never personally used one on my SC, but have read in threads that it is common. can't give much input on the sore thumb. do you use a grip sleeve? was just wondering if you could try that and maybe it would help "soften" the grip enough to add some cushioning.

I really can't help with your hand problems so to speak..but I do have a VERY low budget way too put grips on your guns I bought a 10 speed bicycle innertube for $3+- and sized it next too my XD[and others!] cut off a 2inch piece and rolled it onto my grip, for added grip I stuck 2 cigg. butts for finger placement...you wouldn't believe the comfort and support it gives while you shoot everyone thats done this with there guns has loved it !! its just enough grip and it dosent add much more thickness too the grip..give it a try,all you'll be out of is $3 if you don't like it!!

Best of luck!!

Dave,

Thanks! I think I'll try this out. You wouldn't happen to have any photos of how this looks, do you? I seem to remember some on another thread, maybe. Very creative, by the way!

Your not the only one with the thumb knuckle problem. I've learned to hold the gun a lil bit differently than I did when I first started out. My thumb rests in the indent on the left side of the gun so my hand is making a U. This has kept my knuckle perpindicular to the gun so it's not resting on the gun so to speak. I can't just pick my gun up and start firing, I have to fiddle with my grip to make it right before I start shooting, otherwise I'll get a bloody thumb knuckle.
