Talking Thoughts/questions from a new XD owner!!

OK, just bought my new XD-9 last week on Voting Day. I own a
Walther P22 but have wanted to also get a larger caliber gun, and the
money was there this month. All my friends are Glock .40 owners and
have been trying to win me over that way. I for one don't really have anything against Glocks. But since I first picked up the
XD at my local shop and held it, I've been coveting it. It just felt right. It was such a beautiful-looking gun. So finally after dreaming about it for weeks I went out to Gander Mtn and bought it. Finally took it out shooting today and I love it. It's such a solid gun and I was amazed at
how simple taking it apart and putting it back together was; I could do
it in my sleep, and for someone like me who isn't very mechanical
that's saying alot. I showed it to a friend of mine (it was outside at night -- gets dark quick now) and he was like "wow this looks like a Glock....are you SURE it isn't a Glock?!" come on. The XD has so much more character than a Glock.

Anyways, first question, and keep in mind this is coming from a sort-of novice.
Dick's had a box of 250 remanufactured rounds on sale for $29. I
noticed that the XD manual said the warranty would become void if
reloaded rounds were used in the gun. Don't want that. But how much
of a big deal is it? Anyone else use them or is it frowned on?

Next question, lots of the XD reviews I read spoke of tendency towards
corrosion on the slide. I'm wondering should I oil the outside of the
slide to prevent this?
Thanks and go easy on me.

Yes, always oil the externals on all weapons. And you answered your own question on the reloads.

You will see a lot of people talk about reloads and their use on this forum both good and bad. While reloading can make it cheaper to shoot, it takes a fair amount of time. Additionally you have to have the equipment AND know how to use it. As far as buying reloaded ammunition, I am not a fan of it. Unless you shoot ludicrous amounts, reloading isn't worth the time and effort in my opinion.

You will see WWB used a lot as well. That stands for Winchester White Box. It is factory new Winchester ammo that can be found at places like Wal-Mart for fairly cheap. I have used it and it works quite well. That is probably your best bang for the buck.

I believe Springfield's disclaimer of warranty is pretty much standard among all firearm manufacturer's of noteworthy reputation as related to the use of reloads. It's simply a disclaimer of liability should something occur as a result of using reloads. Obviously, if a person shoots a reload that contains (say) a double charge of powder or a bullet that is seated too deep, the results could lead to disaster causing personal injury and/or firearm destruction (worse case scenario). And if the manufacturer did not advise against using reloads then they could be held responsible or liable to accept the resulting damage. Personally, I find reloading enjoyable but frankly, with the ever increasing price of reloading components, I don't save all that much money. I will NEVER use someone else's reloads but I will (on occasion) purchase reloads from a reputable, professional reloader who I would hope is bonded in the event the ammunition they are reloading and selling to the public should fail resulting in a negative affect. Be careful who you trust to load or reload that explosive device that is at arms reach from your face.

I think the reloading question regarding your warranty is simply a question of integrity. I'm sure lots of folks have shot reloads and then send their weapon in to the manufacturer if they have an issue. If the manufacturer asks me if I have been shooting reloads through my XD I want to be able to say absolutley not without reservation. However, with the XD's record, I don't imagine I am going to have any problem with my XD 45. I have put about 5000 rounds through it, and have never had a problem with it. I was able to take it with me to Afghanistan, (When you work with the SF guys you can get away with stuff like that), and it was the envy of all the SF soldiers there!!

When I first starting reading this forum, I thought WWB stood for "WallyWorld Bullets"

I've already shot about 400 rds of WWB thru my XD9, with no issues.

ha, so did I : ). But it just as well could be - seems like thats their consistent ammo stock anywhere I've had occasion to purchase at Walmart.
