Shooting for the First Time - Cleaning Required?
I have a brand new XDSC. It is oiled and unfired.
Do I need to clean it before I take it to the range to shoot for the first time?
It's oiled, so I don't know why I would need to clean it and re-oil it to go shoot, but I'm new to this and don't know what's what.
Thanks.
Oh, and be quick with your answers, because I want to leave work and go shoot in the next 20 minutes or so...
Thanks again!

Its always wise to clean it first. Im not certain about the XD but some manufacturers coat the barrel to protectic in shipment and storage that should not be fired with still in place.
Even without that, you never know if there are metal chards left over from the machining process, or anything else like that. I would thourly clean it.
Plus you get an excuse to disassemble it.

I shot all of my XD's right out of the box. No problems. They are still as accurate as ever.

My advise - clean it before you shot it for the first time, then clean it every time after you shot it and before you put it away. Can't go wrong with a clean weapon - but you sure can go wrong with a dirty one....
Some of these things come in greasy as h*ll, and you need to get them in the condition you usually like to keep them. Grease is OK, as long as there's just a little and in the right places.
Good luck with it!

Just do a quick field strip, swab the barrel, and wipe down any excess oil.
This will help you get in the habit but I haven't had any issues with the 4 I bought. I took them from the counter, to the ammo lane, to the shooting lane and tore some ragged groups in the paper.
It is a combat pistol that can handle more than you think and many others including myself have found out.
Shoot it and enjoy!

+1
Some guns should be cleaned, like high tolerance 1911's, but XD's being a combat handgun dont need it.
What I'd do is rack it several times, pull the trigger, hold the trigger down, rack it, slowly lift up the finger and make sure you hear the reset.
You can field strip it and make sure that nothing is down the barrel. Just be careful when cleaning the XD, if anything it doesn't like being overoiled. I'm almost 100 percent positive that the few failures in my gun was do to over oiling, which led to getting oil on the extractor.

Thanks everyone. I'll give it a quick wipe just to be sure. I'll miss the lane's closing anyway, dammit.

What does the owners manual say to do prior to shooting the gun?
