For me, shooting 147gr 9mm Minor loads, I prefer a 16# spring. In my 40 Tactical, shooting Major loads, I run with a 18# spring. My Tactical 45ACP also has a 18# spring.

Hope this helps. These are just my preferences, of course.

Old School: I notice on your site that it says that the 22# spring is very popular. Why do you suppose it is that such a heavy spring would be popular, if in your opinion the stock weight or lighter is optimal? - D

I can only speculate the reasoning. Many feel that a heavier spring decreases the slamming rearward motion of the slide, which in turn reduces felt recoil. Because the spring is heavier, when it slams forward, it also drives the nose of the gun down.

Springs and what is best is a personal issue. I suggest that folks get a few weight and see what is best for their gun, loads and shooting style. What I noted is best for me, maybe not for everyone.

Nothing against Dons, guide rods but for my Tactical, I filled the hollow stock rod with lead. the extra added up front weight helps to keep the muzzle down. Its not a night and day difference but if your competing, it shows up in your splits.

When it comes to adding nonreciprocating mass to the front of the gun, the weight options, in increasing order, are:

Stock Rod>Don's Stainless Steel Rod>Stock Rod with Lead> Stock Rod with Tungsten Insert>Solid Tungsten Rod
