Total Breakdown and Cleaning
How often do you competely tear down your XD and clean it well? Taking the slide off, and just cleaning whatever falls out doesn't count. I've had my XD since April or May, and I haven't done this. I thinking that I might need to try it, but I'm kind of scared that I'm going to put it back together and it won't work right.
I know there are alot of tutorials out there, but I'm just curious how often you do it.

Its quite simple, just make sure ure guide rod and spring are centered. I break mine down and clean it after each use.

Are they any special little tools that you use? I imagine there are a few small spring in there that could be hard to handle.

I guess you are refering to a detail strip?
I haven't done one, and i've got a few thousand rounds through it. I don't exactly know how to do it either, but there is a DVD that describes how to do it in detail.

I just use bore cleaner and oil. Sometimes and old toothbrush, patches, silicone rag, and a wire brush. The only spring that that i think would be hard to keep hold of would be the one in the back of the gun below the cocked indicator, and the ones in the trigger assembly.

You shouldn't have to detail strip the pistol to clean it. The User Guide you got with it gives the correct method to take it down for routine cleaning. More than that is not required. If you want to try to disassemble the pistol into its component parts, you really need to get an armorers guide or one of the DVDs that show you the details of disassembly.
I wouldn't recommend you detail strip the pistol unless you're a gunsmith or have access to one. Clean it weapon after every use. and leave the detail stripping to a gunsmith. If it malfunctions, you can always send it back to Springfield for repair.

Today i detail stripped and cleaned my XD-45ACP Service for the first time. I put about 717 rounds through it (purchased about 6 weeks ago) and it seemed like a good thing to do. There was not much gunk in the firing pin assembly or the firing pin saftey. It wasn't hard to detail strip using the directions from www.xd-hs2000.com for reassurance. Granted I have detail stripped my Glock 17 many times before I sold it.
After performing this procedure it seems to me that a detail strip and clean is only needed after an excessive amount of ammo has been put through the weapon. I may make a habit of doing it every 6 - 12 months depending on amout of use.
I am very good with my hands. I have experience as an auto mechanic and I work at a metal shop. I have confidence with things of this nature. If you are not good with tools or mechanical type things I would not recommend performing this procedure.

Ive detail striped my XD once and it wasnt to hard to put back together. IMO the slide should be detail striped every cpl thousand rounds to thoroughly clean and inspect internals (striker tab, striker saftey. ect). There is really no reason to detail strip the lower, with q-tips brushes and polymer safe gunscrubber you can clean the lower very well assembled. The lower can be more of a pain in the butt to put back together but Might be a good idea to do just once to get a better understanding of the internal workings of the gun. follow this link for detail strip instructions. http://www.xd-hs2000.com/disassembly/disassembly.html
