keeping the slide racked back - bad?
A totally newb question, I keep my XD-40 stored with the slide racked back and a gun lock through the mag well. Is there a chance I might be damaging the pistol? Weakening the springs? Or am I just being a paranoid newbie? TIA for any input on this trivial matter.

Well I know the spring on the guide rod is compressed while the slide is locked back... so I think that would be bad.

that is the way it is reccomended to keep it locked if I am not mistaken....
To be honest I'm not sure, I haven't heard of any ever damaging a handgun that way though. The springs are designed to take pretty good punishment. Now, that being said I wouldn't keep it that way for long term storage. If you intend to store it long term and not use it there are better options.
You could leave the action closed and put it in a safe....or better yet you could send it to me and I could...errr....store it for you...
Yes....

I keep mags loaded for weeks at a time. That is not supposed to cause any problems with the springs.
Just a guess on my part, but I would think it is OK.

If you insist upon more than using a locked case, then consider a trigger lock. Your county sheriff or police dept. may give these away as a community service.

Springs get weak by compression and decompression. It's the action that causes springs to weaken. Being compressed or decompressed shouldn't weaken the spring.
This is the prefered method by SA for storage of the XD. They give the cable locks through the mags in there "kits".
Secondly, if you are using Don's Guiderod, the springs are reliatively cheap and should be changed after about 2,000 rounds anyway (which for me, is ussually ever other month) so I wouldn't worry about it much, unless of course your XD is the safe queen, at which point you need to sell it and buy something more fancy for that slot...

I doubt it matters, but if you REALLY want it that locked up and you're really worried, why not just take out the recoil assembly.

Why not use the "safe" indicater that came with the pistol (the little orange gizmo that fits into the receiver and indicates the gun is empty)? This way, you KNOW it's safe and the recoil spring is only slightly compressed.
