In 9mm, I like 147 and 158 grain ammo.
But keep in mind, I don't use them in a pistol and most of the time, it has a suppressor hanging off the end of it.
And before anyone jumps in and says there's no such thing as a 158 gr 9mm round, look it up.

Except that's not how you calculate recoil and the variables are not the correct ones. Mass of the charge, speed of the projectile and mass of the projectile are the pivotal factors in recoil impulse.
The recoil impulse Ir of a small arm can be roughly described as:
 Where:
V0 is the muzzle velocity mp is the mass of the projectile c is the mass of the propellant charge

Seriously I carry 115 grain winchester +P+ and my wife 124 grain +P gold dot. What ever ammo you carry keep the velocity above 1,000 fps make sure it works in your gun 100% of the time and PRACTICE. you have t0 hit center of the chest to have a reasonable hope of stopping the BG.

+5 on this one.
First point is whatever you feed your self-defense firearm, make sure it works properly. Not saying that an XD won't eat damn near any round out there, but just to make SURE, feed it at least 20 - 50 rounds, in various "situations" (strong hand, weak hand, etc.) to ensure that it will feed well.
Many have pointed out the pros and cons of everything 115 to 147 and all in between, so I won't comment any further save for the fact that 99% of the time IF you ever need to defend yourself, you'll be shooting a human target within 7 yards with a good chance of innocent bystanders (wife and kids, friends, etc.) being around. I would factor that into the equation when choosing a round as well.

The problem is you can't find enough HP ammo to do this. I only have 20 rounds of critical defense. Can't find HSTs or Winchester boned which my order has been back ordered for 3 months.

I have quite a few boxes of HP. Go online and buy them from places like ATG. Screw overpriced 20 round boxes of SD ammo.
My wife noted to me sunday she thought the 147gr rounds I had her test (HST and Gold Dots) had more kick to them then her standard 115gr practice rounds.
