Road Trip with my XD. What are the laws?

Hey everyone. Im going to be making a road trip cross country in a couple days. Ill be traveling from AZ to RI nonstop. No siteseeing or detours.
Just wondering what the general rule is for keeping a gun in the vehichle. I think is would be smart to have because you really just never know what can happen.

I know the firearm possession law change from state to state. So just wondering what is acceptable, or if anyone has done somehting similar themselves.

Also. From RI i will be flying back to AZ. Is it still ok to have a field stripped firearm in you checked luggage?

Thanks everyone.

I think every State has Concealed Carry except for a couple (I think RI has CCH) but they don't all reciprocate.

+1 for RI it is a great state (former resident of 19 years)
so i got this info off of www.packing.org . You have reciprocity until you hit PA and then legality stops necause the most direct route to RI from there is up the PA turnpike through NY city and NJ then into Conn and finally RI none of which honor your permit and don't have peacable journey laws minus RI but that means you cannot stay in RI only go through it. so once you hit New England and still wish to be legal it must be put away. In response to the airline question i would call the air line you are flying on and ask them their policy on transporting a firearm and also the link to packing.org will have info from the TSA , mind you this may have changed with the recent terrorist london bombing attempt.
sorry for the long winded post

Hey guys. Thanks for the Replies.
I dont have a permit to carry. I was just planning on keeping it holstered in a case. So just haveing possession in states should be ok? But not concealed.
Anyone know about it being in the driver or passangers "immediate control"?

I know in AZ as long as it is in a holster it is ok. Even if it is holstered in the glove box. and you dont need a ccw for that (in az).

I realize this doesn't pertain to your particular situation, but in Texas, a fairly gun-friendly state, the travel laws are worded poorly. In your case it probably wouldn't be a problem, but if you are carrying a gun around in your car without a CHL, it's recommended to have the gun and ammo separate. That is unless you can show you are in fact going on a long trip.

The point I want to make is it varies so much by state, you have to look at each one individually, and you have to consider that you don't have a CCW so ignore anything you read that pertains to that. Texas doesn't allow open carry at all for instance. In some states you may need to have it plainly visible, some states might not care, and some states may require that the gun and ammo be stored separate and not within reach of the driver, etc.

A good site and up to date site for information on transporting guns is.

www.handgunlaw.us

It is updated more often than packing.org.

Hey guys. I also found this link on the NRA site. http://nraila.org/GunLaws/FederalGunLaws.aspx?ID=59 The guide to interstate transport of firearms. Just from skimming through it, it seems that they recommend keeping it unloaded and locked in a case inside the trunk (as to be safe while traveling through different states with different laws.) This would be virtually useless if i ever really needed it.

Im thinking to aviod and hassles if i were to get pulled over that ill just leave it at home. Its pretty upsetting that we dont have a standardized set of rules amongst all the states. I just hope im not going to have to regret my decesion later on down the road.

Maybe ill just pick up a really big knife and some mace
