snapcap replacement

For anyone who uses snapcaps, when do you suggest replacing them? I've been using them lately to help with trigger pull problems, and i've noticed that the dimple is getting pretty deep. Is there a point where they are no longer effective as a snapcap?

Great question. I wondered that myself. I searched the Traditions website (large manufacturer of snapcaps) and found nothing. So I emailed their customer service and asked them. I did it today & will post the answer when (and if) I get one.

What kind are you using?
The Azooms are the best I've seen. All metal.
I used to use the plastic, but they are crap. I haven't had any problems since changing.
Midway carries almost every caliber in the Azooms.

Mine are "Armsport" or something similar. The name is in cursive so its hard to read. They are the red plastic ones though.

Replace them when they finally break into pieces. You will put wear on your roll pin but there is nothing much you can do about it. The snapcaps them selves will last as long as the plastic holds up. The Azooms are better because they are very close to the cartridge in size, but the aluminum they are made of will also wear so much that they also will eventually stopp working right. I got about 500-700 chamberings with some 45acp Azooms. I don't really know the amount but it was quite a bit, but they started to wear the case mouth area, keeping them from chambering properly. This is after all of the red anodizing had come off the contact points. The rims get pretty chewed up too. they still lasted much longer than the half brass half plastic ones.

Directly from midwayusa.com:

"These Snap Caps can protect the firing pin through more than 3000 dry fires. "

You have a better chance of losing a Snap Cap than you do wearing one out. I would say 3000 hits is a minimum.

I like to get my cap guns out every now and then and remember when I played Hopalong Cassidy and Tom Mix.
