Thought I'd share an interesting article with my fellow XD'ers--- enjoy!
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) May 7th, 2012 – The FBI says there are more than 200 million guns in the United States and that number is shooting up, especially in Wisconsin.
“In the last six months I've sold so many handguns that keeping up with my paper work has been a real issue,” says gun shop manager at General Coin and Gun, John VanToll.
Much of the business attributed to the customers that are buying guns.
“I bet you I have 40 guns on backorder for 40 different customers; rifles, pistols and shotguns. The industry can't keep up with demand right now. We are selling guns faster than they can make them,” says VanToll, thanks to factors like the concealed carry law.
“We usually see a surge in sales just before the gun deer season. This time it was not only deer rifles but concealed hand guns as well,” says VanToll.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice says its Handgun Hotline has handled more than 53,000 calls so far in 2012.
“We've had more delays in the background check than we previously had I think that’s just because of how overwhelmed the FBI is,” he says.
And among the fastest growing buyers are the women.
“If you're out there and you're thinking of committing a crime, that little old lady might have something more than mints in her purse now so you better watch it,” VanToll warns.
Even presidential politics are playing a part.
“When President Obama got elected there was an ammunition shortage because so many people were paranoid. You had to order it ahead of time, internet companies were sold out, and I think this is more of that,” says former hunting guide Clayton Hibbard.
Among the most popular firearms right now is the Glock model 19, mainly because it is mid-size, it’s easy to carry and it’s affordable.
“People are trading in heavier hand guns in exchange for something lighter to carry,” says VanToll.
Even pop culture’s take on zombies and zombie-based video games are firing up the sales.
“Bunch of zombies running around, people getting bit, they want to protect themselves and I think the games have been boosting it so much. They got rounds out there that’s called zombie killers,” says shopper Zach Proctor.
IMO--I'm betting we'll see an even larger SA sales increase once the XDs is finally released..
