Hmm, delayed gun purchase at Cabela's..

Hi Guys. I'm hoping to have some kind of positive light shed on being delayed at Cabela's today when I went to make a new gun purchase. I'm a prior military Vet of 7 years (Army) and I have no felonies or domestic violence charges. Yet for some weird reason I was delayed by the ATF/FBI during the background check.

A Cabela's manager said that it happens often (1 out of 4 gun buyers) & they will know something within 5 days, and if they don't get a callback (from ATF) then I can come back & will then be approved (by Cabela's) to make the purchase.

Has this same thing happened to any of you, and what was the final outcome? Details please...

Needless to say, I'm pretty frustrated & surprised that I'm being delayed..
To add.. I do have a son that's a Jr. He's 25 & has no felonies or criminal record either.
Do you guys think that since we have the exact same name except for the Sr/Jr suffix,
that could've possibly caused the delay? I can't think of any other reasons.

Oh & I was simply trying to purchase another XDm, in 9mm..(3.8" compact version)
Sucks to have to wait cuz my Cabela's seems to have a hard time keeping the compacts in stock. Figures.

Do lots of people get delayed now-a-days just because the ATF is being more cautious? Should I be concerned ?

Any light that anyone can shed on this would be greatly appreciated.

I feel your pain. Ordered my XDM compact and went to pick it up....even with CPL and 19 years with the MI State Police I was DELAYED by NICS for no apparent reason. Really ? REALLY ?

No big deal.....three days later NICS called my dealer and approved me. It just irks me that the law abiding "good guys" have to jump through all the hoops.

It's just one more reason why I won't fly anymore unless I absolutely HAVE to - the TSA gets really upset because I want to take my guns with me on the plane. <sarcasm>

I tell ya, it's enough to make a fella run for public office.......fargin' bastiges !

lol, I hear ya bud.. I don't understand what constitutes a delay in purchasing. Wow, you were a state police officer & you still got delayed? That's crazy!

So do you think I shouldn't have anything to be concerned about ? I'm hoping that's the case. I was surprised to hear Cabela's tell me 1 of 4 gets delayed. Does that sound accurate to you? If so, I guess I can breath a little bit easier, lol.

To clarify, I'm a civilian employee - 911 dispatcher. Still..... I wouldn't get too worked up about it. I just figure it's the ATF's way of discouraging gun purchases....

I can't believe I'm saying this, but.....in their defense, they are most likely REALLY overworked and backlogged with NICS requests, what with the election coming up and folks buying guns in record numbers. I've talked to some of the folks at NICS when they call us on official business, and they're usually very pleasant to deal with. It's the higher-ups and overlords that get under my skin.

With that said, I'll leave you with a parting thought :

I am a U.S. Army veteran too, so thanks for your service. I get delayed off and on. I got delayed on several handguns, then a smith .38 went right through. Then, I got delayed again on an M&P. I just bought a vintage savage model 11...No delay. So your guess is as good as mine.

I wouldn't be surprised if they have a quota to meet and just pick some random people. It is a government agency

you want to talk about delays. i had a friend that was trying to by a glock 19. His record is very clean. well about 15 min after doing the paper work he had a nice talk with the local police dept. someone that has the same name as him as a warrant for his arrest. I tend to always put my ssn on the paperwork for the background.

I'm going tomorrow to get a new gun, and I'm really hoping I don't get delayed. haven't delayed yet and I really want to go shot it tomarrow!

They can delay your purchase if you just so happen to match the description of someone that is wanted by the feds in your area.

I've seen badge carrying LEOs forced to wait because they got unlucky enough to remotely match a felon's description.
