Okay, now before I hear, "There is no such thing as an accidental discharge," I dont like calling them just negligent. So, I hearby invent AND...the Accidental Negligent Discharge. Now, on to what happened...

My friend Josh had come over to show me his new XD9. We had been sitting around for awhile watching some horror flicks. He had his unloaded and open XD9 sitting out. I had stood up to change, because I wanted to go out. As I was changing my shorts, a bright flash came from my right periph coinciding with a loud BAM. I wa shocked and so was my friend. For an milisecond, I didnt know what happened. Then it hit me, "Oh my God, he fired his gun! Where the hell is the bullet?!" I checked myself for holes, then started lookin around. The bullet had grazed my bed behind me and went into my wall. The trajectory was perhaps a foot from my lower back.

After I found the entrance point, I began praying that the bullet had not passed through the wall and ended up in someplace else, or someone. The bullet passed through my bedroom drywall but did not exit the outer layer of my apartments siding. Im not sure what it is, but it aparently is bullet resistent. I was shocked it did not pass through. It was a WWB 9mm FMJ round. The round travelled 3 yards at best before hitting the wall. My friend couldnt tell me how it happened. So, we were really lucky tonight. Me, him, and anyone who may have been in the next building. Perhaps God came down and stopped that M***er F***ing bullet as John Travolta would say. In any event, remember, ALWAYS TREAT A GUN AS IF IT WAS LOADED and NEVER PUT YOUR FINGER ON THE TRIGGER UNLESS READY TO FIRE

Yikes!!! Glad you were witness to "A Miracle" to quote Jules. Any idea on what happened? I would have to assume from the bright light and loud noise that the gun was not cold?? Ain't it amazing how loud it is to hear a gun go off in a closed space without plugs in??

Well, I guess he had loaded it and was going to set it down when it went off. And yes, it was insanely loud since I was standing in front of it about 4 feet away. I feel like I just got out of a megadeth concert. My right ear is ringing like a son of a B...sorry to use harsh letters.

No, he knew what he did, and yelling would have been a bad idea, since it went off and there was a room full of partiers in the next room. I repremanded him sternly, but yelling would not have solved anything. These things happen, even if he is a dumba**

Glad no one was hurt, but I feel the need to gently take exception to the 'these things happen' idea...because if that was true it would be the very best argument for gun control. These things don't "happen"; these things are caused by criminally negligent doofusses.

I've always thought we need a fifth law of gun safety: Guns are not toys; they are inherently potentially hazardous tools, like chainsaws. If you need them, use them; don't play with them.

I think the 'chainsaw rule' provides useful guidance that would avoid a lot of accidental shootings. If he had brought a chainsaw to your party and was flashing it, handing it around, and playing with it, you would undoubtedly have said "Dude...nice chainsaw...but now is neither the time nor the place. Stow it. Tomorrow we can go out in the woods and tuck into some trees with it."

+1. If a friend is one who will load a weapon while I am 4' in front of him in my boxers that would be a friend who I would never allow around me again with a gun. Just because he lucked out and you are not a parapalegic at this point would not make the consequences of his actions any different.

+1. It'd be a long while before I invited that friend back into my house with a gun. I'd probably be more apt to watch hime VERY closely around firearms from now on, too. These things DON'T "just happen." You guys are very lucky. That bullet hits a partier next door... Well, you know.

Amazing, I am not surprised it took the friend a little time to admit what he did. I just hope he is a young guy. It's negligent, I would not have him around me with a gun anymore, but I will admit I have done similarly dumb things as a young 'un. Cars and motorcycles were my death wish of choice, but luckily I never hit anyone else or hit anything too hard. Thank God I survived long enough to wise up! (A few vehicular deaths around me had a rather sobering effect.) I hope he soiled his britches, it's not easy to set off an XD. No doubt he was negligent. At least he was man enough to admit it, I hope he never forgets the incident.
