XD9 chipped locking block
Hi All,
First post, though have lurked for awhile.
I noticed yesterday that the locking block on my XD9 Service model has a chip in the lower left corner. A search revealed this is a common problem, especially in the older models. My XD9 was bought almost 10 years ago to the day..
I know Springfield will replace this, but unfortunately I have done a grip chop to my XD. Now obviously this seems to be a very common/known problem with the locking blocks that did not have a radius cut into them. I am quite sure it has nothing to do with my grip chop.
Will SA give me a hard time because of the grip chop?
Anyone sent in only the locking block, not the whole gun/frame?
Thanks for any info.

1) Not a common problem, but it has happened.
2) Magic 8 Ball sez SA will take care of it. Call them, tell them about the grip chop. They have been pretty "mod friendly" as long as the mod isn't what fugger'd things up.

What Kaboom said is right on. As long as the mod had nothing to do with the broken part you should be fine.
The next locking block will have the Micky Mouse ears cut into the back corners of the block to create a relief.

Heck, you don't even need to mention the mod if you are not willing to tell them about it. Tell them it's chipped and offer to send it in for a replacement; and, swap them out yourself when the new one arrives. It isn't that difficult.
REGARDLESS: They should not give you any push-back about the grip chop.

Thanks for all the replies everyone.. I feel better about SA getting this problem taken care of. I just recently did the grip chop and have only put a couple hundred rounds through the gun since then, just to make sure everything was working properly. It worked without issue. In looking at the condition of the chip, it appears to be older than when I performed the grip chop. I just switched over to using Froglube and was doing a complete thorough cleaning to rid the gun of any petroleum based cleaners. This is when I came across the the chip.
TBH - Though I think it should be covered under warranty, I don't even care too much if I would have to purchase a new locking block (if the price is not ridiculous). I can't find any price or place that sells them.
While I would have no problem sending SA the entire gun to look over (it IS a 10 year old gun), I happen to live in The People's Republik of Kalifornia. I am lucky enough to have a CCW here, but I can only carry the 3 specific guns listed on my license. One of which is my XD9. My main concern is that I get the gun or replacement locking block back ASAP. I have no problem replacing the LB myself if that will be the quickest method.
In my searches, some people said they HAD to send the whole gun back, while a few people said they were able to send just the locking block.. so I was not sure what the current SA policy is..
I will call SA in the morning and find out what my best option is.
Once again, I appreciate the replies and will report back what happens!
Thanks!

Send the whole gun, the barrel locking lugs may also be damaged, let the pros look it over.

Spoke to SA customer service a little while ago. Very pleasant experience. Mentioned the grip chop and was told it most likely would not be an issue.
I had my RMA number and Fed Ex Label within minutes of the conversation. I'm sending in the whole gun. It's a decade old so a good going over is the best option. I purchased in March, 2002 but was told it was manufactured in 2001. It's an old one..
Thanks to everyone who replied. I'm sure SA will take care of things for me. I'll post the outcome when I find out. Off to Fed Ex right now..
Take care,

Cool, thanks. I'd wish you good luck, but I don't think you'll need it.
