Slide Release

I just got a new XD9 Subcompact and have a question. I am unable to release the slide by just thumbing it. I have to pull back on the slide to release it. Is that normal or does it loosen up over time?

It'll loosen up over time. No worries and enjoy your purchase. Oh, and welcome to the forum.

Sent using America's nonexistent 4g network - Sprint.

^^^^^ what he said. Springers are really tight when new. Break it in a little and it'll loosen up.

So is there any problem with releasing the slide via the button vs physically racking the slide?
Will the release/hold button wear, as in round off, from thumbing it over time?

My military and law enforcement training emphasized NOT releasing the slide by depressing the slide lock lever.

You'd have to release the slide with the lever a jillion times to notice any appreciable wear, but many say it is not a good habit... Fine motor skills and all.

JB said it, "Wheaties." And don't worry about wearing it down or rounding it. By the time it actually starts messing anything up, you will have long moved on and bought the next better gun that comes around. :P
"Sling shot" the slide. It's a better habit to develop and makes for a more reliable chambering of that first round.

WELCOME ABOARD!!!

It's best to learn to release the slide in every way possible.

Practice doing it both ways. If the release is tight on a new weapon, it will loosen up over time, just work through it.

That being said, the weapon system is designed to be worked one handed. Your right hand, assuming your right handed, is supposed be be working the entire gun in a combat situation. You left hand should be slamming the new mag into the well, and that is it.
