Considering Two – 9mm, and .45ACP

Considering Two – 9mm, and .45ACP

I've held pretty much every available pistol out there, and shot a few, and the only one that even comes close to the feel, comfort, and accuracy of an XD is the H&K USP. However, the HK is easily twice the price, so I am thinking about doing exactly that - getting two XDs for the price of one HK. One in .45ACP, and one in 9mm. That way, practice can be cheaper if I shoot the 9 the majority of the time.

Now, a couple of minor questions, most of which will be opinions and subjective, but that is what I want, so please answer away.
  • Which length, 4" or 5"?
  • Which color/color combo?
I'm thinking that having both in 5" and black (which is what I would prefer), might make it difficult to tell them apart, which could be a problem in a situation. However, I really do like the 5" in black, hence the conundrum.

Thanks for any and all input.

If you intend to carry it I would recommend the 4". But for range I would recommend the 5". There are plenty of people who carry the 5", as long as you have a proper holster and belt its not a problem.
I prefer the black guns but that's just my personal preference. If you want to tell both guns apart easily you could always color in the engravings. Use a different color for each caliber. There are quite a few threads on here about doing that.

Anything you choose I am sure you will love the XD platform.
Also, Welcome! You will enjoy your time here, there are a lot of knowledgeable people around.

P.S. Make sure you take a look at the XDm line as well.

Questions:
Do you plan to carry one, maybe compact or subcompact(shorter grip) for that one.

The bitone is really nice, my XD 4" is that , My XDM 4.5 is black.

Otherwise i think it's your choice.

Excellent input, thanks. I found a few threads with the inlay, it's nice that crayon works well - that would be reversible if need be.

Now that I know about this, I am likely to get both pieces in 5" black.

Unfortunately, I am in CA so no XDm for me.

I've had 5 XD's/XDm's and amazingly, every color shot well.

I had the 4.5 XDm 40 Bitone but just sold it last week. I bought the 3.8 XDm compact 40 Bitone instead. The same thing but smaller for a carry gun, the grip was to long on the 4.5 for me. The 3.8 also comes with an extended mag that makes it just as long as the 4.5 though..

I'd say 5" for range use and I prefer all black myself. Good luck.

guns and mags have the caliber printed on them, there should be no reason you mix them up if you get two identical models

As long as you don't mind having to waste time having to study the slide engraving. I like OD and black.
