Me too! IMHO, my XD40sc is very shooter friendly & very accurate. As you can see by my sig, once a big fan of the 9mm but amazed at the little difference in recoil of my XD 40sc compared to my 9mm. I'm happy with my stable of four handguns but right now my latest & greatest is the XD40sc... & I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT for edc/CCW!!!

To get you started the cable lock will do fine.
One thing to consider is if your wife plans on shooting the too. IN which case I'd start out with the 9mm. since one XD never seems to be enough for anyone. You can decide later what caliber to go to.

I love my XD40 SC too! I chose 40 because that's what my dad carried as a LEO. not that it was the only reason. I didn't price of ammo and wanted a little larger than a 9mm.

I think the 9mm is the best option for compacts because no matter how much you practice to try to control recoil/muzzle flip, when the SHTF none of that will matter (at least for those of us lowly citizens who are not LEO trained). Get the caliber you can handle well with minimal "correction" because that's what you will fail to when it happens.

Just like shot anticipation, trigger jerk, or sight creep, you can easily manage the so-called .40 muzzle flip with a little practice. If all your practice doesn't matter when the SHTF, why would you practice at all?

16 + 1 capacity of the SC 9mm is another point in its favor....
I have both the service XD-40 and the SC XD-9, and I primarily carry the -40, but that's just me.
Welcome to the forum. Lot of knowledgeable folks here.

I shoot with "LEO trained" LEO's fairly often.
I outshoot "LEO trained" LEO's regularly.
there's nothing magic about their training, and I tend to practice more then most of 'em...and anyone who is willing to put the practice time in will outshoot most cops.

I shoot with local, and federal LEOs and I shoot better than the majority of them.

If they don't shoot that well at the range, they aren't going to do any better on the street.
You do not rise to the occasion; you fall back on your training...and the rule of thumb is that in a real encounter on your best day, you will shoot as well as your worst day on the range.
