Its good to know there are some fellow Utah members on here! I would go with the 45acp and just put a spare mag in your pocket. I also think the pepper spray is a great idea to have on you as well.

I too would go for the biggest cailber you can safely handle. Imho, 9mm/380 is the the bare minimum for human defense, and smaller animals no larger than coyotes. Seeing you are getting into bear and cougar country, I would definitely be thinking bigger. 45 JHP minimum, and perhaps a 44 mag for that area.
In Alaska, I brought my 454 and was still a little concerned with the grizzlies in view.

Who makes that weight in .40s&w???
Or are you hand loading?
You guys that are wanting to pistol a bear should study the issue a bit more closely and compare the ability of a pistol to stop the attack to a big can of spray. It's not macho, but it's effective. Spray will turn a bear and stop the attack pronto. A 9, 40 or .45 will potentially eventually kill the bear --- about the same likelihood as the bear choking to death on your intestines from eating too fast.

if you go for a headshot, that will happen with a lot of pistol calibers.

I'm in northern Utah also. While I don't hike anymore, I do ride ATVs extensively in the mountains and the desert. I am workjing on a deal to swap a .38 special derringer for a .22 magnum derringer so I can use snakeshot.
I also keep a XD9sc in the truck, and when I think of it I put it in the fender bag of the Polaris.
Haven't needed either gun yet, but its comforting having them along.

If its not a self propelled howitzer, you shouldn't even bother carrying.

I also live in northern Utah and love to be outside. I carry a XD .45C with alternating hollow point and full metal jacket 230 gram rounds as a backup to my 12 guage shorty that is loaded with alternating buck shot and slugs.
