So I decided.
Well, between what I have read here at these forums, an Chuck Taylors review I decided to buy an XD. Here are my dilemmas (theres two of them.)
1) This is my first semi auto. I have a SW .38 that I have been shooting for a while. I was planning on getting a 9mm, but at the gone store today, the guy just couldn't resist telling me to get the .40. I will use this as home/vehicle defense an shooting at the range. I know the 9mm is slightly cheaper to shoot but is that worth sacrificing the stopping power? Which would you guys suggest?
2) Second, what finish should I get? I am most concerned with the durabilty of the finish. If the finishes are different, what is different? Also which do you guys like better, solid black or bi-tone?
Can't wait to clear these up so I can get my baby out to the range. Thanks ya'll.

If you are going to get a .40, you might as well get the .45.

The ammo is a lot cheaper for the 9mm, and while some people love to get into the ballistics wars, 9mm is sufficient.
I got rid of my 45s and have all 9mms now. Much cheaper to shoot

9mm-.40 cal-.45 cal
With today's modern quality rounds, the energy impact can be very close, whichever you choose. There is no real advantage among the three (with judicious choice of ammo). There's a lot to be said about what you are comfortable with.
I currently have a couple .45's and a .40 (inter alia). I've been handling .45's (1911) for damn near 60 years; I like the .45. But damn, I find I'm pulling my XD40SC out of my safe more than any other. That gun is a shooter!

my thougths on .40 vs .45 = "felt recoil" (different for each person) ... i shoot .40 like crap.... but the .45 is cake... 9 is easy to shoot and cheaper in the long run, and remember, it's all about shot placement.

9MM, .40, .45 get them all ......., they all will stop any human if you hit them in the right spot and if they don't then move out that neighborhood......LOL, rent them at the range and then make your decision, it all comes down to personal preference I believe.

I always go with 9mm just because the ammo is cheaper. I'm not a cop. I'm not in the army. IF I ever have to shoot anybody, I suspect they will be just as shot with 9mm as an atomic cannon. (That's assuming I don't cry like a little girl, pee my pants, and shoot a bunch of holes in the air.)

Get whatever caliber feels right for you. The .40 is easily convertible to a 9mm or .357 sig with just a barrel and a couple mags, so that's a good choice for flexibility in shooting.
As for finish, go with whatever you think looks cool. You're going to spend time with this gun, and you'll spend it happier if you enjoy the looks of it.
